I much prefer Opeth to DT but I have to say that I find it funny that anyone would think that Lopez is better. Sure Lopez is good but Portnoy is much more interesting and creative. Portnoy could easily play in Opeth (providing he didn't write anything) but Lopez could not do half the cool stuff that Portnoy does.

I've only ever heard two Dream Theater songs properly...in which Portnoy's drumming sounds kinda...hrmm, simple. So I'm going with Lopez even though I've heard shit all Portnoy.

I just saw Portnoy play live on the 19th. I'm seeing Lopez on the 25th. Portnoy does not seem stuck up to me at all. He was having a lot of fun while playing. He even wore one of those boxing robes when walking on stage that said "Iron Mike Portnoy" on the back. I see that as having a sense of humor. I could see MP playing in Opeth, but I don't know about Lopez in DT.

Thanks for the complement illbeleavinnow. \m/

I like Lopez's style more, so he gets my vote. Portnoy's very talented and creative and one of my favorites, and is definitely the "better" drummer, so I'm not knocking him. Lopez also gets bonus points for suddenly getting twice as good on the last albums.

Lopez, for the following reasons:
- i like his style much better
- he doesn't try to show off with stick tosses and ridiculous fills and shit that isn't necessary
- he looks cooler
- he plays a much less cheesy style of music
- i want to bear his love children (and i'm male)
- Opeth is a much more magical and moving band than DT in my opinion,
i used to listen to Scenes From a Memory non-stop, and i bought it the same day i bought Blackwater Park. At first, i much preferred DT, but eventually my interest in Opeth grew into what it is today. It was only 7 months ago that i bought those, my first Opeth and my first DT albums, and the musical journey I've been on courtesy of Opeth has been much more lifechanging than the few weeks of enjoyment DT gave me. I also own Images and Words, as well as the Live Scenes From New York DVD, which I used to love, but now it just seems like pointless showing off of a mediocre album. Petrucci's lyrics piss me off, Portnoy's are better, but they can't hold a candle to what Mikael has written, even on Orchid. And English isn't even his first language (ok, ok.. getting off topic). Ok, so Portnoy's probably a more techically skilled drummer. Lopez creates much more of an immersive atmosphere with his playing, it's much more involving. I can't imagine how anyone would say differently. I tried to listen to SFAM as I was going to sleep and i found the drumming to be a little too forward in the mix, in a bad way. (as opposed to Deliverance, which was spectacular.) I'll shut up now.

Mike Portnoy? The guy with the ludicrously sized drumkit that he can't possibly utilize all of at the same time? haha... no thanks, I'll take a player that furthers the style of music of the band he's playing in. I really don't care whatsoever about drum skill... normally the more technical a player is, the more he is willing to show off and thus, ruin the music by doing so... hell, if I was going for technicality I'd probably vote for Tomas Haake from meshuggah... he is a fucking INSANE syncopated drummer... a machine to be more exact.

But anyway, I choose Lopez because I appreciate the style of music he drums with, and I don't hear any out of place fills, or random showing off with his playing.

Well i haven't exactly heard THAT much dream theater, but i do like them. Portonoy's technical drumming is unparalleled, but trying to vote as unbiased as i can, i'd say Lopez gets my pick. He never overdoes it and his inhumanly tight drumming just sends me into a trance, so to speak.

Btw, there are gonna be SOO many fanboys voting for Lopez and so many people voting for Lopez anyways just cuz they hate Dream Theater

I love Dream Theater, but I'm voting Lopez. Portnoy may be 'technically' a better drummer, but Lopez has significantly more feel. Portnoy way overplays (seems to go hand in hand with his overbearing personality), and when he's put in a situation where the drums need to be restrained he comes up with seriously run of the mill parts.

I am a drummer, and portnoy isn't 'technically' better than lopez. he's actually 'technically' worse. It may sound hard to believe, but what lopez plays is 'technically' more 'technical' from a good drumming ear point of view. He uses more 'technical' techniques than portnoys single stroke rolls around his stupid kit. technically.

AREGHHHHHH

portnoy stuff is so easy to play.
he just uses combinations of twos and fours around a kit like this:

L R L R
L R
L R L R
L R

and he's a shitty double pedal player, and has a stupid kit. There is no way portnoy could play in opeth, it would sound hideous. Every single fill he plays robotically screams 'Look what I can do' as if no-one had the balls to point out that doing left right left right left right left right around the kit possibly isn't the best way to go about things.

Lopez would play something like:

*
L
RLLRRL *
R
llRllR *
rrLrllRR

and then go back to rolling double pedal. which portnoy can't do.

I've seen Portnoy (with Dream theater and Transatlantic) and Lopez live, i prefer Lopez, is more creative.
But personnaly my best drummer ever is Gavin Harrison.
Try to get his DVD if you like drums. :hotjump:

Yet another personal opinion thread that can have little factual resolve to it, being a question of which drummer is preferred. Posting it on Opeth's forum raises Martin Lopez' bias, just as posting this same question on a Dream Theater forum would raise Mr. Portnoy's. With the various equipment differences and song styles, it's very difficult to objectively differentiate a drummers ability and style from the aforementioned elements.

With that out of the way, the superior songwriting and musical ability of Mikael Åkerfeldt and Peter Lindgren would make less-than-stellar drumming a non-issue. However, Mr. Lopez carries his hefty responsibilties out exceptionally well. In my estimation, he adds to the band, rather than playing along with the intimidating figures of Peter and Mikael, as I feel many drummers would.

Mike Portnoy is the intimidating figure of Dream Theater, and with conviction. When compared with Opeth, Portnoy's band cannot compete, though. Would Portnoy thrive in Opeth? Would he out-do Lopez? Would Lopez create the same aura that Portnoy has in Dream Theater? Speculation can lead anywhere. With the discrepancies between the bands, Lopez is given the nod.
