Yet another personal opinion thread that can have little factual resolve to it, being a question of which drummer is preferred. Posting it on Opeth's forum raises Martin Lopez' bias, just as posting this same question on a Dream Theater forum would raise Mr. Portnoy's. With the various equipment differences and song styles, it's very difficult to objectively differentiate a drummers ability and style from the aforementioned elements.

With that out of the way, the superior songwriting and musical ability of Mikael Åkerfeldt and Peter Lindgren would make less-than-stellar drumming a non-issue. However, Mr. Lopez carries his hefty responsibilties out exceptionally well. In my estimation, he adds to the band, rather than playing along with the intimidating figures of Peter and Mikael, as I feel many drummers would.

Mike Portnoy is the intimidating figure of Dream Theater, and with conviction. When compared with Opeth, Portnoy's band cannot compete, though. Would Portnoy thrive in Opeth? Would he out-do Lopez? Would Lopez create the same aura that Portnoy has in Dream Theater? Speculation can lead anywhere. With the discrepancies between the bands, Lopez is given the nod.

Exceptionally put. I virtua-shake your hand in appreciation for intelligent comment.

I am a drummer as well and I like both of these drummer, but of course, I love Lopez's drumming and I like Portnoy's, but he seems to be repetitive in his drumming. I haven't heard much Dream Theater, but I have heard a good bit from Liquid Tension Experiment. Lopez catches me more so than Portnoy. I don't feel like saying anything more.

I voted for Lopez just because I can't stand the way Portnoy's drums sound. He has probably the worst bass and snare drum sound I've heard this side of St. Anger. I'm a DT fan, but the actual drum sound sucks.

I don't know shit about drumming or technical drumming. I just know I like what I hear coming out of Lopez's drum kit more. And I do own every Opeth and Dream Theater cd so I am qualified to voice an opinion I believe.

I guess I should join in on this. I liked reading other peoples opinions but a lot haven't even heard all of Dream Theater's music. I liked the way people say that Portnoy could be in Opeth but Lopez couldn't be in DT. I think that Portnoy is more creative and that seems to rub off as technical skill as well. Lopez plays in a band dominated by guitars and that is hard to compete with in my mind. Where as in Dream Theater,Mike goes up against Petrucci(which I think writes much better lyrics)Rudess and Myung. All of them are technically advanced. Dream Theater have written many songs that have touch me emotionally but Opeth owns everyone when it comes to emotion. I can't recall much of Portnoy's drumming now that I think about it. I can always remember Lopez's totally awesome rolls! I mean those things just fucking rip! As far as playing technical,I'm sure Portnoy can do anything he wants but he just doesn't have it in his head. He really does just fumble around his kit instead of creating anything worth remembering. I like Tony Laureano the most though. That guy is like Portnoy and Lopez combined. Just superhuman! If anyone likes Tony...let your presence be known! Tony is from Nile btw. Lopez gets my vote because now I'm thinking Portnoy and Rudess don't let my ears hear drums anymore.

Okay.. I've read some interesting stuff here..mostly biased. but I'm definitely UNBIASED here. I've been listening to DT and Liquid Tension Experiment (and a couple other of Portnoy's side projects) far longer than Opeth. AND I drum. I have all of DT's CD's and their DVD. I even own a couple of Portnoy's instructional videos. I also own most of Opeth's albums (working on getting the first couple). Although Mike Portnoy is more technical (odd time signatures, better schooled, quicker hands, more proper), I'm going to give this one to Lopez. He plays with a lot more of emotion and feeling. I also enjoy his style more. His drumming is much more creative, progressive, and epic also, as where Portnoy will just take the same beat throughout the song and twist and play around with it. Dream Theater is too orchestrated. No improvisation whatsoever. Both are great bands though. I could go on and on.. but i will shush..

by the way.. Gene Hoglan (Death, SYL, Dark Angel, Testament) kills all of them.. that meshuggah shit is hard to play as well. and dillinger escape plan
