lowest form(s) of music

Mainstream Country and Southern Rock I can't stand. My sister is a huge fan of Country and Southern Rock, so she plays Mainstream stuff in the car when she is at home from College. The good thing is she also plays non mainstream Country and Southern Rock which is really good.

My top 5 least favourite genres/styles of music. I'm not saying they are entirely bad since it is subjective but I find these to be least appealing.

1. R&B - the worst form of music, period.

2. Country - should contain a warning label "Listening to country causes apathy or lack of energy etc" because it just kills me. It seems plausible that if I took upon a guitar, sat on my porch drinking beer for a hour singing about what I saw, I could probably write a life time's worth of country albums. Of course, you can't forget such tired lyrical themes of my pick-up truck, my dog, my girlfriend or my beer.

3. Disco...not that I've heard a lot of disco but it just isn't something I'd ever listen to.

4. Rap/Hip-hop. I can respect some artists but I can't say I will ever support a group who can't use decent grammar or spelling. Nothing from this genre appeals to me, and the 'image' deters me most.

5. Emo. An absolute trend, I can't stand the whining of the music nor the near-paragraph long song titles like" OMG I couldn't think of a good enough song title so I decided to call it this just in case anyone wanted to know!!!!111ones." I could care less if this is considered 'real' emo or not, either one doesn't appeal to me.

I would add 'pop' to my list but it is such a general term and not that I care for any, my only real dislike for pop is mid-90's onward.

1) So are you saying Ray Charles, and Aretha Franklin are bad? Think about ALL R&B before generalizing.

2) You most likely heard mainstream country, I agree it is complete shit.

3) Yeah you're pretty much right about disco

4) Yeah its all about image these days. Really gay, how bling and shit you have doesn't appeal even the first time. Mainstream Hip-Hop artists today have such short careers, they lose popularity fast and end up back on the streets.

5) You're not talking about real Emo. Poser Emo as I call it is bands like Simple Plan (it pretty much started with them) and Panic! At The Disco. They're so gay.

The majority of Pop-punk is bad, although I do like old Sum 41. But Pop-punk did kind of signal an end to the era of horrible techno shit.

Recently Pop-punk took a horrible turn, since the Emo fad was becoming popular they decided to pick up Poser Emo bands like Panic! At The Disco and The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and they made Fall Out Boy Poser Emo because they were already popular and might lose fans to the Emo fad so the mainstream changed them to be safe.

The mainstream rejects innovation now, they want everything thats in, and when fads change they change, it used to be music that changed fads, not fads that changed music.

And I wouldn't call Poser Emo depressing Pop-Punk, its not even depressing, its just lyrics from the point of view of an overly sensetive 12 year old girl.

Exactly. Lots of these little bands on myspace call themselves Pop and Pop-Punk but you have to be popular to be classified as those.

So why did you and most people list 'pop' in your post as the lowest form of music, if it is not a 'form' of music at all?

Also, where are you getting the idea that pop is not a form of music from? What's your reasoning and authority? I could just as easily say "this is a rock":

"rock is not a form of music". I have nothing to back it up, but I am right anyway.

we are getting it from the fact that its not classsified as a form of music, it simply means popular. at walmart metallica, megadeth, korn, the beatles, luther vandross, madonna are all in the same section listed as "pop" because they are popular bands

So Walmart has the final say, without any justification to back it up?

What style are Madonna and the Beatles if not pop?

Well I agree that pop music isn't a specific genre, but I disagree with the notion that it is only an abbreviated term for popular music. It does depend on the time period for what is popular or trendy among the mainstream, but if a band mimics say Britney Spears' sound then they are most likely to be a pop band regardless of whether or not they are a popular band. Hearing a band like Napalm Death on a popular radio station wouldn't make them pop unless their particular sound, effortlessly garnered the attention of mainstream viewers and media. Pop music as history has shown is typically geared towards having an accessible, mainstream-friendly sound and grindcore/extreme metal will never accomplish this.

This means very little. I've gone to future shop and seen Cradle of Filth on the same racks, as I have Korn, as I have Madonna. Cradle of Filth is a popular metal band but popularity among metal accounts for little or nothing in regards to general popularity. Usually places like Walmart, Future Shop etc have very poor genre classifications of which I often find nearly everything generally labeled as "pop/rock."

the beatles are rock :Smug:

madonna, who knows what she is because every album she just follows what ever trend is popular at the time, so i guess that makes her "pop" music

Madonna is a genre that isn't really classified, along with britney spears.

This arguement over if pop is a real genre is so fucking annoying. Just get over it, pop means popular, its not a genre, its just an adjective. Pop music includes lots of styles, from Hard Rock to Folk to Rap, its anything popular. So everyone just get the fuck over it and if I see, "But pop is blah blah blah" I will be pissed.

Your post confuses me. First you say pop isn't a style of music, then you say 'pop music' has a particular type of sound.

I think pop is a style, but it is most often used to mean whatever is popular. So there are 2 levels of classification - Cradle of Filth can be metal but pop in the non-musical sense because they are popular. Every band must fit into a genre - pop music is a label for stuff like Britney Spears, for if not then what style is she?

What I meant is that pop isn't necessarily a specific genre/style but it can be generally characterized by things like a song being very accessible & ear-friendly, catchy, and simplistic, with focus being on the singer as opposed to the other instruments (if there are any). Pop music is also partly determined by the time/era's current music trend so a grindcore-death metal band like Napalm Death cannot be pop music because their style of music isn't favourable to media and mainstream society even if their fanbase grows and they get radio time.

Yes "pop" may derive from popular music, but that isn't its sole definition. Britney Spears is pop, and all the unpopular bands who sound just like her are pop as well (regardless if they are popular or not - that was sort of my point). Just because a band is popular doesn't mean they are pop...

FUCK

This thread is to discuss your least favorite forms of music, not discuss what pop means! Just shut the fuck up, this thread has been very off topic!

Just because a band is popular doesn't mean they are pop...

Where did you learn about music? The back of a Trix box?
