I don't understand people who dislike a certain band because of their lyrics, if the music is good, why should it matter what kind of lyrics they write? Like, in the band recommendations forum, I see many threads like "Recommend me a band with this kind of lyrical theme" or whatever. I can't understand how that matters, care to explain?

Metal is clearly a genre whereby lyrics are a secondary priority.

How I view it, good lyrics effectively complement a musical opus, but if the lyrics aren't that great, by no means does that deteriorate the quality of the actual music.

Don't really understand either. It's like people who refuse to listen to bands, even if they enjoy the music, because of the lyrics.

Last time I checked, lyrics are part of the music in the same way that different riffs, basslines and drum patterns are part of a band's music. Even if you're listening to something like black or death metal where the vocals are unintelligible, the lyrics are still a part of the music and the way it's presented, and are generally related to the mood or concept of the album.

Couple that with the fact that most bands in the world use vocals that are easily understood, and now you know what lyrics are for.

In closing, even if you personally ignore the lyrics, you'd have to actually be a complete mental retard to seriously wonder why some people find them interesting and appealing.

Sociologically, women pay more attention to lyrics than men, but I don't mean that as anything personal.

Personally, I do value lyrics, but rarely do I lose interest in a band because its lyrics are silly. I draw a line, and good lyrics put a band above that line, but bad lyrics never pull a band below it.

In metal, lyrics are generally not the primary factor and sometimes seem poorly written but this never causes a problem for any of us which is obvious because vocals are much harder to understand . I am sure that most of us would get sick of "Satan! Satan! Rape Nun!" if we heard it loud and clear. While others like Deathspell Omega have some highly, highly interesting thought out lyrics with highly interesting ways of doing vocals

I'm not saying that anyone has to prefer certain lyrics, but actually asking or wondering why people do is extremely stupid. That's what my previous statement is about.

lyrics are over rated. i dont care about lyrics, but sometimes i like to sing along to cheesy lyrics. like manowar

other bands play...
MANOWAR KILLS!
~gR~

Lyrics make or break a band because you have to either understand what the vocalist is meaning exactly or the lyrics have to atleast compelle you to make your own meaning.

There are certain bands I think are completely made by their lyrics.

For example:

Yeah, Skyclad's music is amazing, but when someone mentions them the first thing that is always mentioned is the lyrics.

True.
Although sometimes it's fun to have stupid lyrics that are intelligible (see: manowar)

This would be much more fun to debate on a pop music forum.

It's amazing how many people still evaluate music primarily based on its lyrics. Usually the same kind of scumbags who consider the Beatles the best rock band ever...

I do care more with non-metal music, but I care very little about lyrics in metal and I often would rather not be able to understand them some of the time. Normally if the lyrics manage to be not bad, that's enough. A dumb, easily audible lyric can nearly ruin a song at times. But that's not all that often.

Lyrics are of big mportance to me. As someone already said its just as much a part of the music as the riffs, the drums and whatever else a band might have added to their songs. Great lyrics can help a mediocre album and bad lyrics can bring down a instrumentally excellent album.

Personally I have a hard time for humorous lyrics (allthough alot of Anthrax seem to slip through). I also have a hard time with the partying lyrics (allthough Pantera does pass alot of the times).

Now lyrics doesnt always have to be deep and philosophical. LIke in Manowars case its stuff I've been brought up with and their lyrics, as cheesy as they may be, adds to the whole concept. For me in a good way.

I mean if I take a album where I love the lyrics like Nevermores 2this godless endeavour" and would replace every single word with something from Cannibal Corpse then to me the whole album would become alot worse than it is now.

I have a friend who values lyrics over the other parts of the music. I however am not that strict. The instruments are of most importance but the lyrics can be seen as the icing on the cake. It can ruin the whole cake or it could really push the taste to be godly :)

Well they are abviously wrong. The Beatles were the greatest POP band ever.
