i will not yet reveal my feelings about this album. will post my review soon.

i have been revisiting a lot of material from era vulgaris and have decided that it is about 40% amazing and 60% shit.

definitely one of their best songs IMO

Still waiting for your review of ...Like Clockwork. Pretty much every other Queens of the Stone Age fan I know is infatuated with it, and I guess The Press is going bonkers as well. Good for all of them for openly being so wrong in today's myway/highway society.

I listened to it twice. I went on quite a rant that evening, the wife was privy to such nonsense. Poor thing. She called it perfectly great background music that nobody pays attention to. I think that's what made me so angry in the first place.

Call me curious. I respect your opinion, as well as your mushroom-gathering abilities.

not that i'm marksveldt or anyone remotely worthwhile, but this thing has really grown on me.

stylistically, it's a bit of a departure from anything else Homme & co. have produced. it just seems a lot, i don't know, drearier? it almost feels like a dream. "smooth sailing" fucking rocks.

then again, Songs for the Deaf and the s/t it is not. i've also not heard Era Vulgaris in full so.

You are a valid member. You taught me the ways of the Boondock Saints, I am forever in your debt!

Era Vulgaris = DOMA

The first time I listened to it, I thought "WTF is this shit?" and threw away the CD-r. Then I saw all the heaping praise for it and dl'ed it again, listened and thought "WTF is this shit?"

That was that.

whoa i forgot all about this. well it's probably a good thing i didnt post any sort of review because my opinion has changed quite a bit. usually when i listen to an album 4 or 5 times, i have a solid feeling about whether or not i actually like it or not. different story here... i thought "like clockwork" was awesome when it came out but i have quite a few reservations now.

great intro track. "Keep Your Eyes Peeled". the beginning of the song is has a heavy "era vulgaris" vibe IMO. what i enjoy is that it sort of tricks you into thinking that they went in a similar direction with the dissonant, "city noise" type stuff... but there is a fair amount of contrast by the end of the song. "I sat by the ocean" has really classic QUOTSA riffs and vocal melodies, sort of a quick song that never really goes anywhere or says much. you get excited when the song starts, but when it breaks into the chorus, i always feel really let down. "vampyre of time and memory" is an awesome song with a super lame title. the synthesizer/key stuff is excellent. "if i had a tail" is just boring as fuck and complete filler material. i enjoy "my god is the sun". good tune. it reminds me most of the "songs for the deaf"-era material, which is probably why i like it so much. dark, but with plenty of intensity. another short song, kind of radio-friendly. "fairweather friends", best song for sure. great riffage, the sort of shit i expect from this band. like the piano. i'm pretty sure elton john sang on this song as well, which is completely bad-ass. the last three songs enticed me on the first listens, but they basically amount to nothing but more filler with a few interesting moments.

a lot of very different material here, he definitely has evolved as a songwriter since the self-titled days, but i didn't feel that this release had a very clear direction. it's all over the place. some of it just sounds a little too soft and sort of tame or "safe". it's like he's trying to break into this vocal+piano slow song sort of thing, but it just doesn't come out well! i can't imagine that he's going to start writing crunchy desert rock again after this, so i sort of have a bad feeling about any future releases. QUOTSA is still one of my favorite bands, but their first three albums will never be beat. "lullabies to paralyze" was about "half-good". era vulgeris has two great songs, two good songs, and the rest is a total letdown. "like clockwork" is the band's least impressive album for sure, thus adding to the decline of memorable material which started with "lullabies". i still anxiously await any new material, but i can definitely say that i am not expecting to be dazzled. this is no longer fuzzy, desert, or stoner, rock and roll. like NAD said, maybe i'm just not in their target audience anymore. bummer

TL;DR - the groove is officially gone :(

Sweet. Thanks for that. I remember really enjoying My G-d is the Sun, the two times I heard it. And the second half of Fairweather Friends. Not enough to bother a third time, but still.

I doubt I'll check out anything further from them. I don't actively hate many things, but man, this album came fucking close. Songs for the Deaf remains outstanding, so that's good.

i remember when the internet was all about casually calling people faggots

Fuck... time really is a weird thing. My opinions about these albums have changed dramatically.

In 2014, I went to go see QOTSA in Rhode Island with my wife. Her mom had purchased the tickets for us as we were unable to access a computer when the sale began (this was during the work day). I quickly checked the seats and determined that we were in the 5th row of the upper balcony. Cool, whatever.

At the show, we went up to the balcony and were told that we were in the wrong place. The guy said "follow me" and took us downstairs to the 5th row from the stage. Absolutely crazy seats... we were extremely close to the band and the sound was INCREDIBLE. They played a bunch of classics and nearly the entire "Like Clockwork..." album. I have never witnessed such a perfect, true-to-the-recording performance in my entire life. Ever since that night, the album totally clicked and it is easily my favorite QOTSA release (followed closely by "Songs for the Deaf"). I also read some of my old comments about "Era Vulgeris" which I can no longer back up. It's a great album.

The NEW ONE however, is actually pretty poor- and I'm positive that my opinion will not be changing about that.

Dang. That's crazy, yo. Sounds like a pretty nifty experience yous twos had there.

Said Clockwork has grown on me and I do enjoy it on occasion, but I can't see myself ever liking it nearly as much as their first 3 albums. But hey, maybe in 5 years it'll grow even more.

I still think Era Vulgaris is terrible, in the Bottom 10 of albums I still own. And as for the new dance album, I listened to it multiple times when it came out, forgot about it entirely, and then one final spin this week. In conclusion:
