Actually, Mudvayne was the first to be called math-metal back in 96-97 in an attempt to describe the intricacies, although there are and have been much more technical bands around, being referred to as technical long before. Nonetheless, math-metal has stuck around, most commonly used by newcomers to the broader aspects of metal, or by younger metal heds.

the old before dilinger... i think the guys from Mastodon have start that style long before dilinger... they play in LETHARGY, and thats i guess roots of math/tech/hc like dilinger, the end, etc...
