Returning ICED EARTH singer Matt Barlow has issued the following statement:

"Brothers and sisters,

"I'm sure that you are all well aware of things that are happening within ICED EARTH, and a statement from me is well overdue. To that, I can only say that I am sorry for the delay, but there is good reason. Last week, following Jon's [Schaffer, guitar] announcement [Statement#1, Statement#2], my wife gave birth to our second son. Everything is well, but of course, those of you who are parents know how taxing the first week can be. During that time, after all things had begun to settle, I realized that there are a lot of things on my plate. At this point, I needed to address them. As you know, family always comes first. Of course, Jon knows that and understands my decision to leave ICED EARTH four years ago. My wife and I wanting a family was a huge factor. Family is also the reason for my return. There is a kinship that goes beyond the obvious. I will speak of that later.

"First, I feel that I need to acknowledge my friend Michael of PYRAMAZE. If not for his inquiry and persistence in asking me to be a member of that band, I may not have realized how much I have missed and been missed within the metal community. In recent days, however, I have come to realize that my participation in PYRAMAZE cannot go beyond the recording of the band's current work. This is due in part, to the fact that I can't be all places at all times. Michael and I have discussed this, and have come to an understanding. I know that the future success of PYRAMAZE will not be based solely on individual performances of band members, but in the songwriting and total performance of the band, which is excellent. I know that I will give everything I have to the record and will support PYRAMAZE on a lot of other levels.

"Let me proceed on the topic of kinship. For a great portion of our lives, Jon and I dedicated our selves to creating music that pleased, angered, saddened, and inspired. Though it can be argued that my contribution was limited, I always felt very proud of what we accomplished with every song. Whether a song was about a true love, a best friend, a ghost, a devil, or a savior; the songs that wrote gave me the desire to engage each one on a very personal level. When Jon and I began to discuss the future of ICED EARTH and his feeling on its success or failure, he conveyed to me the desire to rediscover the passion of the songs that made ICED EARTH so very special to so many people. In my journey of the last several years, I've had time to acknowledge that there are great stories yet to be told. Moreover, I have recognized my desire to be a part of those stories. As mentioned above, there are obvious time constraints where it relates to family, career, and music. One of those issues has already been addressed.

"As for my career in law enforcement, it will continue as normal. Without going into specific detail, Jon and I will work on recording on my time between shifts. As Jon stated before, live performances will be more limited but grander in fashion. We will do our very best to get to the metal masses as often as possible. Jon understands that this schedule will be tougher to work with, but feels that it will be the best for the fans in the long run. There will be critics, no doubt. It has recently come to my attention that some people don't like the police ;-) Let's see if opinion can change on that issue!

"As for the music, I will bring to ICED EARTH the best performance possible. That has always been my desire, and I'm really excited to work with Jon and the guys again, to give you the best metal possible. If you think you're ready... let's do this!"

No surprise.

It's a pity for Michael and the band, but I am sure that you will find a good (and more suitable, perhaps) replacement.

I guess this new album will be quite a special thing indeed...we will all cherish it mightily :)

Hell yeah. I'm dissapointed that I'll never get to hear Matt's take on the older songs (Especially Sleepy Hollow and Legend), but Iced Earth IS my favorite band and Matt is only human (but I do have to wonder about that sometimes when I hear him singing:worship:) and can only handle so much at a time so I guess I can't really complain about this.

It was as I thought. Matt will keep his word to do the album anyway and I really respect that he keeps word in this.
I only think that Pyramaze would have deserved to have a singer like Matt for the longer run, allthough Lance was/is also a very good singer (it would surprise me if he would return though).

I feel sorry for Pyramaze, but I am sure that they will find a good replacement. They have proven in the past that they can find great singers, so let's be patient and enjoy the release with Matt. :headbang:

Bullocks.
Hopefully it'll be someone good.
All you iced earth fellows better not leave the ranks of the pyrawarriors.
Hell no, I've been a Pyramaze fan since the debut was out in 2004...wish I could find the dude on the old Iced Realm forum that recommended them to me ;)

BTW, it's "bollocks"...am I right, Nomad? :D

BTW - There's no chance of this newish convert to the Pyramaze cause jumping ship either. I've really been hooked into this band with Lance's vocals let alone Matt's, fingers crossed the singer for the 4th album can stand alongside the two greats that have lent their vocal talents to the band so far.

I'm certainly going to keep on spreading the word about how good this band is. :headbang:

Nomad's pretty much got it covered.
What would REALLY bring some very twisted humor is if Owens sang for Pyramaze. Which would kickass.

Though it would only last 2 albums and Lance King would return. lol

Owens is a great singer but he has 2 bands that he is currently working on already. So this without Ripper being booted by lance is wishful thinking on my part.

I've heard people saying this... but what could ripper possibly bring to Pyramaze?

He's an ace vocalist no doubt... but does he really suit Pyramaze? I bet not one person would have made this connection if not for the iced earth drama

Whats your thing against Ripper? Its not like this would actually happen...though it would make for a metal soap opera if Ripper landed in Pyramaze.Honestly i think Rippers style would fit w/ Pyramaze.Look at lances style...great range w/ mainly high vocal pitch, that is Ripper dead on except for his heavy screaming. When there search began after Lance had left i think some others mentioned Ripper as a long shot replacement.
If none of us ever heard of Matt or Ripper before (w/ an unbiased opinion) and they were brought in to try out for Pyramaze... wouldn't surprise me in the least if Ripper got the nod.
Back to reality...Matt is going to sing on this next cd & i can't wait to hear it!

Hah hah... I have nothing against Ripper. In fact I adore him, and love him in IE, and i'm also one of the few who liked in JP.

But he would not fit in Pyramaze at all. Comparing him to lance simply because they both can hit high notes is flawed. They sound nothing alike. And Ripper, unlike Lance, cannot hit low notes. Not a slam on him, just a fact.

It would make for a good soap opera, but certainly not reality.

That's pretty much exactly summed up how I'd feel about Ripper being linked to Pyramaze as well.

It's a shame Lance moved on and Matt cannot commit long term but I'm sure it'll be third time lucky when the next singer comes aboard :)

O.k. ,Ripper is not exactly like Lance & i wasn't necessarily trying say that he is.My point is these guys are all great metal singers. If you are a fan of Rippers (probably more than i am) and he obviously has the talent to sing in some of metals best bands in IE, JP & his solo band, then i think he could pull it off in Pyramaze as well...thats all.

No I got you. I'm just saying I don't think his voice would fit them. It's not... majestic enough!
