MAYH is more dark and evil then anything in black metal

haha...

Yeah, it's Opeth's most evil album, but the fact that you think it's darker than anything black metal has to offer is ridiculous.

Listen to "Hvis Lysett Tar Oss" by Burzum or "A Blaze in the Northern Sky" by Darkthrone and then rethink what you've said...

if I would have to label an Opeth album as "evil" I would say it's Deliverance!

Meh Evil Scale:

RAGING DEMONS :erk:

1. My Arms Your Hearse
2. Deliverance
3. Still Life
4. Blackwater Park
5. Damnation
6. Orchid
7. Morningrise

DANCING BUTTERFLIES :Spin:

My preference order:

1. My Arms Your Hearse
2. Still Life
3. Morningrise
4. Blackwater Park
5. Orchid
6. Damnation
7. Deliverance

(I HATE PUTTING DAMNATION 6th  )

This shows that the evilness has little or no link with goodness, for me at least. It maybe helps though.

Eh. I don't really think it's that evil. It's just horribly morbid and deep, in the same way Still Life was.

Now the real evil stuff is in brutal death metal bands that have lyrics such as "Kill everyone and baste your turkey with their blood/it makes for a good meal". Yeah no one ever had those lyrics but that'd be pretty evil. Lol. Another form of evil is Eminem. I mean he sings about raping his mom. God damn...

But yeah, MAYH is really more morbid and depressing than evil.

Also, I'd like to make it clear, I, personally, think MAYH is one of Opeth's worst albums. *hides*

Hmmm...i never really put Opeth in the "Black Metal" category figuring they were so much better than bands like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle Of Filth....O_o thats just me...
MAYH is a good record...very good record...but evil? hmmm.....

Uh, taking what Threak said a step further, those aren't even black metal bands--they're faggoth bands. That's not to say they aren't good in their own right, they just aren't black metal, period.

You, I seem to remember, were involved in an amusing and interesting Black Metal debate with some other guy in the Emperor forum a while ago. Hehe.

No one said the album was black metal.

The atmosphere it creates is very dark though.

As a fan of black metal let me clarify what black metal is because it seems like some don't really know.

The atmosphere of a black metal album isn't dark and gloomy, it's evil and Satanic. Their lyrics are more towards death and Paganism and worshipping Satan, and there's no way Opeth is black metal. Black metal is NOISE, the production is bad on purpose to create a more occult feeling. The guitars are incredibly distorted and everything is complete chaos. That's black metal. Opeth is structed and with long beautiful melodies and a gloomy atmosphere, pretty much the opposite of black metal.

I know no one said Opeth was a black metal band but I just thought I'd share that. =P

But in my opinion MAYH doesn't compare to Still Life in the whole doom area.

It doesn't matter if you like them or not, they still play black metal.

I wouldnt say that COF play black metal at all.Their music is based on gothic and dark themes more so than BM.And doesn't really carry any ideology.

And Dimmu Borgir's music is based well within the scene, but they are still far beyond what BM really is.Its more like technically progressed BM.

Take a look at the bands i listed above, and d/l some of thier songs to hear the difference.

Cradle of Filth may be far out in the black metal spectrum, but they are still black metal imho. I wouldn't call Dimmu Borgir especially techinical, they have a more keyboardheavy, symphonic approach to black metal. And yes, I've heard most of the bands you stated, but my own reference point in black metal is the allmighty Dark Funeral.
