Melodic death metal

Tales is a great album. Very weird, and sometimes hard to really get into (I'd call it the melodic death metal equivalent of Mayhem
s Grand Declaration of War), but a great album. It's folk metal rather than melodic death, but when it was released there was no folk metal and regardless, it's a great, folky, very melodic death metal album.

I'd call it melodic death/doom with folkish influences, but yeah; it's beautifull, relaxing and still pretty heavy. :saint: :worship:

Insomnium (the best melodeath band next to IF), Noumena, Before The Dawn, Nightrage, Anaktorian (too bad they disbanded), Kalmah, Everlost, Swallow The Sun... Mostly pure melodic sound with no core elements. Although I like some good metalcore :kickass:

Btw, about the disturbed/slipknot ->

insomnium are good but i think they need to release a few more albums before they are ranked ahead of DT in ANYONE'S opinion.

At The Gates
Dark Tranquility
World Under Blood
Old Soil Work
COB
Dimension Zero

In Flames - Whoracle
Dark Tranquillity - Damage Done
Immortal Souls - Wintereich
Soilwork - Stabbing The Drama (Still need to get their better stuff, though)

I'm still sort of a n00b to Melodic Death, even though I've been listening to In Flames and Dark Tranquillity for almost 2 years now. Weird thing is, my guitar playing is very Melodic Death oriented, which I find strange since I don't listen to a butt load of it.

Fail.
On multiple levels.

What about bands that have female vocalists as well as male death growls, are they considered melodic death metal?

For example Lycanthia

Well, vocals don't determine genre. So if they play melodic death metal, then yes, they are.
When deciding a band's genre, imagine them without any vocals at all.
And Lycanthia sound like some form of doom metal (I'm not an expert on doom metal enough to say where in that genre they fit). It's a loose fit. But no, they don't sound like melodic death metal to me.
Btw this is based on the song Lost. Which, by the way, is pretty dope.

That song has Sabine dominating the vocals, most Lycanthia songs have both Lee and Sabine sharing vocals about equal and the songs vary from fast to slow depending on which song.

All the songs have Lee doing death growls and include strong melodies but I can see a difference in style compared to bands most people class as Melodic death.

Yes people do class Lycanthia as some sort of Doom but troo Doomers will argue heavily against that.

Fail.

Fucking fail.
They do some determination.
You're honestly crazy if you think vocals don't do shit.
Vocals are an instrument too, what the hell is wrong with you? It's like you're saying "fuck vocals they don't mean shit" that's very dull to say.

One of the main reasons why MDM exists is because they encorperate DEATH VOCALS. Uhhhdurrrr.. duaaagh..

Seriously though.

I'd say based on the general style they'd be doom. Sounds more like Amorphis than AtG and IF.

No.
You see, you can sing however you want. If bloodbath had bruce dickinson on vocals, would they be nwobhm? If rob halford fronted immortal, would that make them a speed metal band? If Corpsegrinder sang for Motley Crue, would they be a death metal band? The answer to all of those questions is OF COURSE NOT.

WeAreInFlames I think you have to be goddamn retarded to not take in vocals to add style in music at all. You fucking retard. It has consideration. Are you going to say a vocal-only band isn't music now or something? What the fuck is wrong with you?

Calm down man, everyone knows he's wrong and he knows he's wrong... however he is an excellent WUM, in that he sometimes makes his opinion seem half-legit (not in this case, mind). The key to a WUM is being able to have points to back up a ridiculous and/or offensive argument with to make other posters angry. Ignoring it will produce better results thsan arguing against it.
