As many as they can until fans decide to stop buying them. The only thing keeping Metallica from recording and playing would be their health but it looks like they are in good health. I feel the same about a band like Judas Priest even though I know they are older. Except Priest have put out better albums and are probably better live today than Metallica.

There are parts in there that are good, or could be good. Obviously they cant write 10min songs that are interesting anymore. Why not just try another Black Album approach with shorter simpler songs and work on the few good riffs they manage to come up with.

Probably the self titled album by the band Eerie. They try to mash black metal, heavy metal, and prog rock together. Doesn't really work, after 3-4 listens I've given up on "getting" what they were trying to do.
