Metal Bands That Suck...8-]]

I like mediocre/trad USPM from the 1980's. Add a raw, evil atmosphere to it and some vocals from hell and I'm happy.

Still better than Avenged Sevenfold.

But where in the hell do you hear an "evil atmosphere" in that song? The main riff is just straight 8th note chugging on a major scale. The lyrics are largely positive as well. Most Jpop I listen to sounds more evil than that.

Well, Japanese pop anyways, I guess that's not the same thing as Jpop.

Which is exactly my point. "Melodic black metal", especially in the context of "Hellenic black metal", is not even black metal. It's traditional/power metal with shit production and skramz. Power metal for 90s exxxtreeem metal fuccbois. Metal basically exhausted its creative potential by 1994, since then it's just various ways of ripping off 80s metal while pretending to do something new.

Black metal lacks any kind of unified definition. A genre that can be anything isn't really anything.

I've always felt that black metal is more than anything else defined by romantic elements, so in a way it is rather nebulous.

Power metal obviously beats black metal when it comes to romanticism, but in general I don't disagree, more evidence that black metal is flowery, low-art tripe.

I think you might have misunderstood my usage of romantic here, I more meant that black metal is defined aesthetically rather than technically. But I'm not really sure even that makes sense, black metal is pretty fucking nonsensical.

Early black metal certainly had technical parameters, but as of the late 90s onward it does seem pretty vague aside from "un-melodic extreme metal that isn't as technical as death metal".

Stuff like Emperor, Sacramentum, etc is little more than melody. If it's un-something it's un-syncopated, very on-the-beat rhythmically in general.

Not sure if you're saying Emperor is melodic, but I would disagree if so. Power metal is melodic. Emperor is just *relatively* melodic compared to other black metal. They still have plenty of un-melodic parts.

Unless you're talking about the S/T EP with some of the more Celtic Frost-y moments, I don't know what you're hearing if you don't hear melody in Emperor. Both it and much of power metal focus on large melody lines at the front with the rhythms fast and unvaried.
