Metal for the Parents

listened to envy, extremely unimpressed

emo still pretty much sucks IMO

Envy is not emo **shakes head**

They are more post-rock than anything these days, but their roots are hardcore/screamo.

Envy are one of those bands who are MUCH better live than on their recordings. Great band.

^ You definitely have no idea what you're talking about sonny. They're about as far removed from emo as you can get. Do you even know anything by the band? have you taken the time to actually listen to them?

Go and see them and you'll see how many emos rock up at their gigs - not that many.

 Looks like you don't even know what emo is. Fuck, must I babysit this board whenever someone brings up some music other than metal?

The problem is that your definition of emo is stuck with how society generally sees it. The "emos" you're seeing at shows aren't actually emo. They're scene faggot kids. It's not the same thing; it's a misconception. Envy is emo.

real emo is actually really good music. Rites Of Spring, Embrace, Grey Matter, Sunny Day Real Estate, Reversal Of Man, all good stuff.

And all the crap my sister listens to is mainstream garbage.

my sister is the same way. my brother on the other hand, likes Sonic Youth and Pavement, so I can't complain. he's an indie kid. at least he's not like my sister.

I haven't even expressed how I view emo in any comment I've made about this, so I have no idea where you pulled that one from other than making it up.

Sorry V, I really think you have no idea what you're talking about. Envy are NOT emo at all. They have hardcore/screamo roots (which is where you're getting confused), but have now started to move further into post-rock. If you disagree, well, I guess you've got some album listening to do and not just myspace. Actually, add some post rock to that as well. Same goes for you as well Hatebreeder. Neither one of you know anything about this band, nor their ties to the post rock scene and its record labels. Both of you are talking trash.

 They mix emo and post-rock. Give up, you're not going to win. I guess you'd say that Gantz and Corea are not emo any more because they make use of post-rock elements as well.

Insomniac Doze is not post-rock enough to take away the emo label.

Sorry Mort. You have no idea what you're talking about as usual. Envy weren't even emo before they moved towards post-rock, and I never said that they are purely post-rock now anyway. They have still kept their roots but are further away from them than have been in previous years.

lmao YES they ABSOLUTELY are screamo (a style of emo), I can't believe you're completely failing at this. Just because you know THE ROOTS OF THE BAND and are friends with their parents or something doesn't mean you can invent things. And also, actually I do know plenty about Level Plane as well as Temporary Residence, the two foremost labels Envy has worked with during their existence. So thanks for assuming really stupid things and being wrong...?

They COMBINE post-rock and screamo. Believe it or not, bands can combine styles and sounds. Isn't that fucking MINDBLOWING?

There are many bands that that have remained true to the genre's original traits, well into the 21st century. Some of these bands include Circle Takes the Square and City of Caterpillar. Also notable is the fact that screamo has expanded well beyond the regions and countries where it originated, and there are screamo bands from many countries around the world. A few of these include Envy from Japan, and Raein and La Quiete, both from Italy.

Yea, I just dont get how some people can not view the word emo on two sides, one being the right way and one being the wrong way. Its like debating that Slipknot is "metal" because society says so while we all know that they are not metal.
