Mikael's Death Vox-Who rates

Ok....

Chuck's early vocals were very deep death vocals. Over time, it got higher- and higher-pitched. On the last several Death albums, his vocals were a lot higher, but they were still grunty, gritty, and death vocals. Thrash vocals? Look at Tom Araya... Tom and Chuck - no comparison.

But, Mikael has some of the best death vocals I've ever heard... he can be so dynamic. At times, he can be so low, you'd think he'd be vomiting satan. His higher-pitched stuff is black metal-worthy. He rules, hands down. And his sustain... wow! He can carry on a growl for a looooong time.

EDGE OF SANITY GUY?!?!?! MOTHER FUCKER, YOU SHALL ADDRESS HIM AS MR. DAN SWANO!!!!!!!

I think Mike is my fav(I'm not a big death metal fan though, the only realy DM I listened to is Cryptopsy :ill: ). His death vox on Crimson are absoultely amazing IMO.

chuck's vocals were never even good, ive always thought he was a very weak vocalist.. great music, but when compared to others, he is a bad vocalist.. mikael is probably my favorite.. he really has great vocals.. death and clean.. anders (in flames) would be my favorite but of course he has gone to shit on recent albums.. but damn, whoracle/colony.. i lvoe his vocals on there

I think Chuck's vocals got much better later on. They didn't sound forced on Sound of Perseverence like they did before. He's a favorite anyway.

Mikael is probably first for me. Mikael from DT is great too. He's more expressive than Opeth's Mike, I think. Also, the guy from Entombed (I love how we're all just saying "the guy"). Mm.. George Fisher, Karl Willets (Bolt Thrower - even though he's totally monotonous it's somehow very pleasant), John Gallagher (just because he sounds so fucking ridiculous).

Chuck doesn't have detah vocals, he has thrash vocals. Those dudes from Carcass and Obituary and Six Feet Under, etc, those guys have no dynamics and it sounds like they're burping the words. Shitty.

I havne't heard much of Immortal or Covenant, or Entombed, so I can't say anything about them. But I think Mikael's growls own anyone. They're so deep and so powerful.

1.Chuck has (or had) thrash vocals and not death?
2.The singers from Carcass Obituary and Six Feet Under are the best around.
3.You haven't heard much of Immortal and Entombed, which are a MUST.

But i agree that Michael's growls are easily the best in the world.

Mike from opeth is probably my favourite....i like him best on breeding death by bloodbath though.

Mathew Chalk from psycroptic is also one of my favourites, he has a very good range. http://www.psycroptic.com/multimedia.htm if you haven't heard them before and are curious.

i also like peter from vader, mikeal stanne (especially on damage done), Steve Tucker, karl sanders

OK, maybe I don't know what good death vocals are, but I absolutely hate those on Six Feet Under or Cannibal Corpse or Obituary. Absolutely hate them. :)

And yeah he did have thrash vocals. Just my opinion. Metalstorm seems to agree too. Glad I'm not alone.

I'm d/lding some Entombed and Immortal right now btw.

Do you have Death's "Leprosy" album? I just don't see how anyone can say those aren't death grunts. I don't remember James Hetfield, Tom Araya, Dave Mustaine or Joey Belladona singing like Chuck on Leprosy???

Maybe people should actually get FULL ALBUMS, instead of downloading the odd song here and there and then telling everyone what the bands are like. Are you going to tell us all about Entombed now once you download 2 songs by them? :hypno:

"Kid"??? I'm fuckin 26. And I know what you've said - but you STILL haven't answered the question. Do you have Leprosy (the album not the disease!)? And do you have Scream Bloody Gore?

 Okay, if you have Leprosy I just don't understand how you can say those aren't death vocals. You are obviously a young guy (Not an insult BTW) so you don't remember when those bands (Death and Obituary) first came out and started the whole death metal genre. Like someone said, just because YOU dont think they sound like death vocals doesnt change the fact that they ARE according to the majority of fans and magazine critics (who basically define the genres as we know them anyway).
And the singing on Pull The Plug IS death growling, whether YOU agree or not. You can't change the entire definition of a genre just because you feel like it! If it's been an accepted fact for about two decades what makes you think your opinion suddenly changes things?

BTW What do you think of Scream Bloody Gore?

You have a good point, and I went off the subject a lot talking about what are or aren't death metal vocals, and now I know that those were death growls.

I still stand by two things:

a.) Chuck is an awful vocalist.
b.) His later vocals were very high and thrashy

EDIT: Scream Bloody Gore is one of their best CDs. Being their first, I also hold it in higher esteem, as it's one of the best debut albums ever.

Your two points
a) I respect your opinion, but I love Chuck's earlier singing. His vocals on Pull The Plug (I LOVE that song) are amazing IMO and I really like his work on Human and ITP. Although you're right -
b)His vocals did get very high, and I don't like them so much. His singing on TSOP is very high pitched, although I don't think it's like thrash. Thrash was always more like normal heavy metal singing to me(Anthrax, Sacred Reich, Annihilator etc are closer to Maiden and Priest in vocal style) whereas Chucks voice is more like screaming than singing on his later work.
