Well, the age of the strings really effecs the sound. Also, the guage effects it, especially when detuned, for example 10s in C isn't only hard to play, but also sounds like complete shit.
I'm a little bit sceptic about the brand thing thouhg, cus most major US made strings are made in only two factories, and are therefore almost identical. But the sound/playability may differ a bit anyway.

oh, and to return to the real subject, here's some info on mikes strings, at least for studio work:
Strings: Dadario 010 electrics, Martin Phosphor 12str, Dr.Thomastik 011

Apparently your ear is not so hot, I have a poor ear and I notice a monsterous difference between gauge.

the gauge only effects how it plays, it may sound a tiny tiny bit chunkier but no one would notice a difference.
