Moshing at a Dream Theater show

And now his voice has mostly come back. He still isn't quite as good as he was, but he still has some fuckin pipes. And still has that tonality that I LOVE.

Watch that and tell me he can't sing live.

You're kidding me right? This is a professionally filmed recording that I can almost guarantee has had some studio work done on it. How about finding me something that hasn't been tainted by studio magic and trying to prove your point then.

First of all, I don't think of Dream Theater as a metal band at all. They are a progressive rock band with metal influence. Sure they have a metal album (Train of Thought) and some heavy songs, but the majority of their material is waaaay more diverse than most other bands. They happen to be my favorite band. Why? Not because of their technical ability, but because their songs make me feel something. I haven't heard another prog band that puts such emotion into their music. And the fact Dream Theater can be emotional and technical at the same time is one of the factors bringing them their success. And don't even start on Labrie's voice, because there is no other singer that sounds like him. His voice ranges from soft and whispery, all the way to powerful and aggressive, without sounding like just another power metal singer with no personality. I don't want to hear ANY other singer with them. He is the PERFECT fit for them and if you don't like it go listen to whatever the hell you want to and quit trying to act cool by calling great bands "overrated" just because they have a bigger fan base than your favorite bands.

I pretty much agree with you. They go beyond the realms of metal. To be honest, they didn't really sound metal until Train of Thought. Since then I would consider them metal, but I think a lot of it is people who are metalheads think they're only metal.

Interesting how much hate they're getting on this thread. Haven't quite seen hate directed towards Dream Theater on this forum since, ever really. They're one of my top bands and honestly, they're one of my top live acts too. Outside of the opener spot on the Maiden tour, what I admire about them is they're one of the rare metal bands that change up their setlist all the time.

Just ignore the usual prog metal hater idiots (Jeremy, Matt, Bob, Brent, etc).

why are you saying i hate prog? also i NEVER made mention of DT in my actual comment it was more about the "re-tards" out on the lawn.

it's obvious you know anything about me and my likes as far as much goes. i mean i am sorry that i signed CANVAS SOLARIS to my mainly metalcore label BEFORE ken and Sensory Music. so i wouldn't like prog would i? take a risk on a band with NO VOCALS just progressive music. WOAH!?! watch out! prog-hater on deck.

hahaha, but seriously. DT sucks now, so i will say that for a fact. i have a vinyl copy of When Dream And Day Unite framed in my office to my immediate left as i type this. so that says what i think of early DT before they let Portnoy take over the reigns of the band. they have been crap for years, but i am the only one who "dares" to voice it.

either way, like my original post said. they are in the pit just to hit one another and let out some aggression and could care less that DT is playing the soundtrack.

BAM! ;)

I don't get that either. I mean sure their last few albums have been mediocre, but they created the template that most of our favorite bands are working from.

I would not call Black Clouds and Silver Linings mediocre. Some songs like The Count of Tuscany and A Nightmare to Remember are flat out awesome.

I'd say it's a good album. The best they wrote in a really long time.

I think it's the other way around.

Just curious but can you point to some examples of this. Everyone will disagree about what is the best music/bands, but it is good to know why people feel the way they do. I'd like to be more informed as to why you feel this way.

I liked most of Systematic Chaos, and hated most of Black Clouds, especially The Count of Tuscany. It was bloated and had some really inane lyrics.

I'm talking about ProgPower type bands, not your holy blessed Annihilator (blessings and peace be upon them) here. I don't think there's a prog metal band that has played this fest who wasn't influenced by Dream Theater.

If you're trying to be a smartass, you won't live up to me, so don't try. I wasn't talking about Annihilator. I'm talking about bands like Megadeth, Metallica, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, etc... You said our "favorite bands". If you had said prog bands or bands playing at progpower, then you might have had a point.

Dream Theater covers Iron Maiden, not the other way around. :)

They've done a couple covers of Maiden and did the official bootleg (which was awful btw). Bands do covers all the time, but it doesn't mean they are copying Maiden's sound. Honestly, Portnoy says that Maiden helped with the blueprint of the sound for DT but to be perfectly honest I don't hear it in the music. I hear Rush and I also hear some Metallica but not Maiden. DT is THE blueprint for the vast majority of prog bands such as Vanden Plas, Circus Maximus, etc. That's what we're talking about.
