War for Territory
I'm looking for something extremely sad and moody. Listening to My Dying Bride has made me hungry for more. I know there's much better stuff out there, and I'm sure you know of them.

A lot of albums and bands come to mind (Deinonychus, Elend, ...) but one beats them all:

Dissolving of Prodigy - Time Ruins Also Beauty

Forest of Shadows - Where Dreams Turn To Dust (3 track EP of really sorrowful doom)

Forest Stream - Tears of Mortal Solitude (great melodic and symphonic doom, mixed with bits of melodic black metal)

Novembers Doom - Any of their releases. For heavy, slow, growly doom try their earlier stuff, they get more melodic as the albums get newer, all good stuff

Swallow The Sun - The Morning Never Came (really good heavy, slow, depressing doom)

Shape of Despair - Angels of Distress (depressing doom, really good symphonics, recommended)

Of course there's the early periods of the bigguns - Katatonia, Anathema and Paradise Lost (and My Dying Bride but you already know them)

Lacrimase Profundere, good band along the lines of early Katatonia and My Dying Bride, good stuff, although not everyone likes it (especially luminousaether :p)

The Prophecy - Ashes (really good british doom band)

I fucken love Suicidal Emotions, it's one of my personal favorites of all time. Along that sort of line, if possible.

None So Vile - That doom stuff isn't realy what I'm after. I've heard a lot of Katatonia/Novembers Doom/Anathema, but none of it realy brings out the pure feelings of hopelessness that I'm talking about.

Excellent List Blackwinter day. Id add any song off of Today is the Day's Sadness Will Prevail.

Lasting Dose and Suffering brings wisdom off Sonic Excess by Crowbar.

Oh and The Scream of the Butterfly by Acid Bath.

Until Death Overtakes Me - Prelude to Monolith
Thergothon - Stream From the Heavens
Skepticism - Stormcrowfleet
Pantheist - O Solitude

Alice In Chains. I put their albums on when I was in a great mood and wanted to slash my fucking wrists shortly after. What a fucking shitty, depressing band - and how they can be called "metal" i don't know. Fucking shite, that's what I'd call them. If you want to feel desperate and depressed, stick "Dirt" on and wallow in self pity.

Abruptum, easily. One of the first 'black' bands I ever heard, and no black, noise or doom i've heard since touches the depressing, hopeless and disturbing noise Abruptum are responsible for.

That list is going to keep me busy for a while...I'm starting to really "enjoy" (ha) doom metal! I didn't dig Things Viral though. Maybe it will grow on me.

Although not metal, a lot of Univers Zero's catalog is pretty damn depressing. I'm sure a lot of metal-heads could dig their stuff. It's very dark, chamber influenced, prog rock.

As far as metal goes, I'm not much of a doom fan, but plenty of black metal is dark and depressing.

And anyone that HONESTLY finds Type O depressing has a very low tolerance for sadness.
