Most popular underground metal Band. Is it Opeth?

I agree that Lacuna Coil can become mainstream very quickly with their music. However, to the original poster... My guess would be Dream Theater has the biggest fan base if you consider that whole list underground metal. I've known many people who love Dream Theater and have no clue who In Flames or Opeth is.

First of all Dream Theater is not underground... It could be Dimmu Borgir, Blind Guardian, Opeth or In Flames from the remaining choices(in this order of possibility)...

Well, every band on that list is underground with the exception of DT, who are on a major label. I'd say out of that list, Dimmu with Opeth at a close second.

what your implying is 'if its not mainstream, its underground' while many of these bands are huge and have albums in the charts along with videos on TV and everything. These bands are NOT underground. They certainly arent mainstream, but they are popular metal bands.

But then again, underground bands are hard to judge in popularity. You could say that Fluisterwoud are becoming very popular in the Netherlands, or that Astriaal or Psycroptic have broken the international market, which is rare for aussie bands.

Actually a good question. If I had to go by airplay (XM), I would say its between Dying Fetus, Hatebreed, Six Feet Under, The Black Dahlia Murders, Goatwhore, and maybe Dimmu.

Yeah, Dream Theater is easily the most well-known off that list, but I wouldn't call them underground, that's for sure. I'd say it's either In Flames or Dimmu Borgir, both are getting a ton of attention...Arch Enemy and Lacuna Coil are reaching that level too. I don't see how Opeth is winning, unless tons of people are just voting for them cause they're their favorite.

I voted Shadows Fall but after further thinking Dream Theatre is probably most popular. I have a feeling In Flames is gonna take off after their next album hits stores.

Well I put Dream Theater on that list because I never heard of them before I got into metal. I heard about them 6 years ago when I was into commerical music and looking for lesser known bands. Then just about a year or 2 ago I really heard about them. So for the casual music listener who just listens to the radio and dont check internet music sites and such. DT is really not known at all.

I bought the CD with both demos on it from them as soon as they made it (2002)

But yes, they are indeed great.

Eyal from Daath turned me onto them a little under a year ago. You probably haven't heard that band, but check out the latest concert photos on the Arsis site and look in the background. They were playing in Eyal's studio. (Daath is pretty good too, but their style is way different. You should check em out if you give credit to originality though. http://daathmusic.com)

I like Opeth more than any of those other bands, but I'd have to say that Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth are WWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAY more popular, but I don't consider then underground, but neither is Opeth.
