Movies

Well I just watched The Butterfly Effect yesterday and it was a very healthy movie to watch. Not necessarily the deepest movie ever, but well-acted and different enough from the standard formula (even though there are many of these "sci-fi in the real world" movies coming out lately) to keep me interested in it. The first movie in a pretty long while that I've cried to, I could relate to it in many personal occurrances and it was easy to just be generally empathic. Oh, and Ashton Kutcher isn't half bad in it.
Magnolia was good as well, although I watched it in that many parts that I didn't really get everything out of it, I think. There was good dialogue, but to say anything beyond that I'd have to watch it a second time.

I saw 'Jacobs Ladder' tonight. I found it rather scary... especially the hospital scene where it just gets mre and more crappy untill its just bits of body sprewn everywhere. I Think it was an excellent film, although I didnt totally enjoy it. I guess I just wasn't really in the mood.

This is probably old news now, but us folk 'down-under' aren't exactly up-to-date with newest releases, unless they're huge :(

Saw Alexander and wasn't impressed. Only made me want to research events myself to see how much the movie tried to dramatise and get away with.

Watched "The Grudge" (american remake) yesterday and it sucked
why did they even bother? of course, they had to "americanize" it, meaning have a meaningless kissing scene at the beginning, and lots of cheesy romantic crap
we want blood dammit
they took away all the mistery too.... meh

In the need for some violence, I watched Battle Royale again last night. What a great film. [edit] Someone in it reminds me quite a lot of someone in my Chemistry class. It got me to thinking what I'd do if my class was put in that situation. I certainly know who'd be first to go. Then I started imagining the DT forum members being taken there. It was a fun night inside my head. [/edit]

I still have a lot of films on my comp left to watch, I must get around to it sometime - 25th Hour, The Day After Tomorrow, Elephant, Memento, and a couple of others too.

What's the deal with Elephant? *has to find* :dopey:

edit: Last night i watched "Blade II". It was nice mindless fun.

Just watched the DVD of Collateral w/ Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx
I usually do not watch Tom Cruise movies as I find his cupcake acting
all a bore. But I must say I enjoyed Tom in this movie as he is totally
bad without any redeeming qualities. I watched it because its a
Michael Mann Film and always find MM movies to be entertaining
I recommend this movie -

Sin City by R. Rodriguez (man, the theme from the trailer haunting be since then!), Constantine (let's see what Reeves can do besides playing Superman :loco:, SAW (yay!! DVD is due release next week).

Aye, this DVD is worth watching/buying - a really strong feature :headbang: Tom is quite a good actor, I'm starting enjoying him much lately (since Minority Report), looking forward to The War of the Worlds by Stevie Spbg with him (they showed off for real last time =)

I saw Bubba-Ho-Tep yesterday. Bloody hilarious movie. Very clever, very scary, very funny. Everything one wants in a film. It's really incredible.

I also saw Blue velvet. I found it pretty disturbing in places, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I'm not sure what to make of some of it though. I can't decipher what it's trying to say (Representation)... Except that this is a strange world.

Its talking about the contrasting and conflicting aspets of various characters but mainly Jeffrey, but it uses other characters as reflections and projections of different aspects of their personality. Lynch tends to do this very often but it might not be apparent since this is his most subtle film ( along with Wild at hearth perhaps )

I saw Closer today.. very, very disturbing movie. Mainly because it reminds me of things I thought Id never witness again :erk:
Still, a very good film

Requiem For A Dream

Holy Shit.

Left me speechless. That had the best dynamic of any film I've seen, and possibly the most affecting and harrowing tale I think Ill ever see or hear. I really didn't ""enjoy"" the movie, but I know I wasn't supposed to. The movie's purpose had full effect on it's audience tonight. Truely enthraling but emotionally testing, I nearly had to look away from the screen on one or two occasions.

Best thing about the movie was the hip-hop editing and the 'film language' in general. The stylish approach really solidfied the film as true art.

My head's still spinning though :ill:

I know of 120 days of sodom. Haven't seen it so can't judge but it sounds less like it has a message and more like it's just disturbing pornographic drivel. Based on a true story isn't it? there is such a thing as too distrubing, and I still have boundaries. I'm entertained by good films, not sadistic ones (<if that's what you were implying by linking 120DoS).

Don't you prefer films that affect all your sensibilities (in either possitive or negative ways) to ones that just hold your attention for 2 hours and serve little or no greater purpose than offering mindless entertainment?

There is a message, about even in the 20th century when people are supposedly civillised, we're all animals deep down. It's about "the ease with which the powerful can intimidate the weak", that "man has no kind nature" (quotes are borrowed from imdb because I'm crap at summing things up like that). And so on. Disturbing it is, but drivel it's not. As for pornography, there is quite a bit of nakedness but never any details or close-ups - and anyone who gets turned on by such a film is as sick as the 4 gentlemen in it.

This depends on what mood I'm in, sometimes some mindless entertainment is much preferable to something deeper. :p Anyway, I only linked the film because I thought you might be interested in it - but having not seen most of the films you write about here, I suppose I don't have an exact idea of what your tastes are. I certainly wasn't accusing you of being a sadist.

Okidoki :p. Thank you for the reccomendation, and I apologise for assuming you linked it purely due to it's extreme nature. All I'd heard about the film previously was that it involved non stop rape and it was done in a tasteless way... but that was form someone who had read a review, and not someone who had watched the film.
