It's worthless to see a particular band as an embodiment of an entire genre as every band's interpretation of the genre they fit into is different, and if you say BAND X = THE GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT OF GENRE Y then by logic no other bands are even in that genre anymore.

so if you say Mayhem's the best black metal band Darkthrone isn't black metal anymore because of minimal differences in their approach to the genre?

edit: for me, it's more like this: Mayhem and Darkthrone are black metal, but I like Darkthrone better. So, both of these creations are black metal, they both represent the genre, and one represents it in a way i find to be of higher quality. and then BOTH those bands go on to inform what i consider black metal

No, that's not what you would be saying, according to your argument. You would be saying "black metal is good because Mayhem is a good band", while maintaining that the other bands of the genre more or less suck.

it doesn't make sense to me either

edit: can't we just chalk this one up as different understanding of genre and leave it alone? i mean, i don't even put much value in genre at the end of the day

OK, fine, I misworded that. If you say "BAND X IS THE HIGH POINT OF GENRE Y AND BECAUSE A BAND BELONGING TO GENRE Y CAN SOUND LIKE BAND X, GENRE Y IS GOOD" then you're only effectively saying "BAND X IS GOOD LOL" and nothing valuable about the genre whatsoever.

as long as band X represents the genre at all, their output can inform my opinion of the genre's quality. makes sense to me like this, i dunno. i'm saying that every band i've heard from the genre is part of my understanding of its quality, but i lean towards the greatest achievements of a genre in assessing its quality because i find that the best of the genre constitutes what it's capable of, and thats where the true quality lies imo

If you (hypothetically!) listen to every other band of the genre and conclude that they all suck except band X, how can band X possibly be indicative of the genre's quality?

because, as i've said above, i'm talking about 'genre' in the abstract sense, removed from all that's been created under its banner. the genre itself. all those bands together represent it, but the best ones are still part of it. just like i'm not going to say "movies suck!" after seeing just because of all the hollywood shit that comes out these days. i'm going to say "movies rule!" even though a lot of them are shit, because i like some of them. look, i'm stoned, i don't know if i can explain it any better than that :zombie:

I love these arguments about totally unimportant things that are so prevalent on RC.

Fine, I guess we have totally opposing views of this. I just don't have a problem with saying "movies fucking suck" (which I often do) despite, obviously, enjoying several of the movies I've seen; nor do I have a problem with saying "punk is fucking shite and everyone who listens to punk should die" and then putting on an Amebix record. 'Tis the way I work

the genres themselves don't suck. if there's a single exception, it proves that the genre itself is capable of more than is conventionally achieved with it. to me, at least, that sounds like human fault, which has little to do with the genre in itself does it?

If (band) is the only (representative of their genre) worth listening to, I don't think it necessarily invalidates the genre as a whole, instead it establishes a standard. I believe King Crimson does the latter for progressive rock, but I'd never say "why bother with any other prog band?" just because of that claim of superiority. BTW, I voted for no fewer than seven genres on the poll...so much for being open-minded 90% of the time. And voting for every option is gay and lying.
Great animated sasquatch, on that we can all agree.

which makes me think ... you do say you're not gay a lot as well :loco:
