My Argosy Arrived

I smoke Hubbly (Hookah) in my studio pretty often. 100% of the time mint tobacco mixed with weed (menthol weed).
My studio always ends up smelling minty.

Smoking aside, can't wait to see more gear in that desk :)

I try not to smoke cigs in the studio. Every once in a while I slip up. We smoke a shitload of weed in there though. Which is just as bad for gear as is cigarrettes.

It's funny I've recorded a couple times in a pretty well known studio that I'll leave nameless and the producer/engineer smokes an assload of weed all day. Then he walks around with a can of deoxit spraying down scratchy pots on the Neve console, hehe :hypno: Go figure.

I just split the difference and don't smoke... ever. More productive, less fucking around & the band can go out and smoke on their own time/lunch breaks. Once the CD is pressed we all go out and get plastered to compensate.

eh, never really noticed a difference
well you've likely never opened your gear up and looked inside after a year or so... lol.. try pulling module after module out of a 4040 E and having to clean just 2 years worth of smoke residue off the pots, caps, and other components of each one.... might make ya think twice. :zombie:

Ermz, i'm with you... i don't smoke anything at all... and clients can go outside.

While I agree that smoking inside the studio is a no-no, I've met more people and booked more clients while outside a club smoking than I have anywhere else.

Crazy clients you have man! I guess I would really doubt the studio/engineer if that happened to me haha! Especially in a more expensive studio. Recording is not fun - its serious work!;)[/quote

That's fucking stupid. I see no reason to think an engineer/facility is less capable just because there is weed smoking going on. Again, I love it when people have no idea what the fuck they are talking about and have nothing but unfounded bullshit to call upon for their information. I can be high as shit and still do everything like I can do sober. Come back when you know something.

Everyone's different, as are their experiences.

In my experience, the dudes I've worked with who have had the worst work ethic, least professional attitudes and results have been the perpetual weed smokers - on either side of the glass. I don't mean that to sound mean, and I sincerely mean no offense, but that's how it's turned out for me. But, I can see how IF the clients as well as the AE are both smokers of any kind, it could create a comradery that would be conducive to a good vibe (if not super productive ;) ).

I'm a nobody I realize, but I can safely say that when looking at a prospective studio, if the AE is a chain smoker/weed toker and/or has pets IN the studio, I'd take my business elsewhere. I don't smoke/toke and I don't care to be around it...I don't wanna be bothered by pet dander and/or a dog breathing/humping/slobbering/barking all over me, either. The last time I recorded a full length in a proper studio (not doing it myself), we had all of the above: cigs, weed, dogs and cats. I know at least 300-500 of our studio dollars went to hours "up in smoke".

Whoa now buddy, breathe! I'm pretty sure he didn't make any assumptions about weed smokers.

For the record, my closest three friends are potheads. I do the weekly thing now, not every day. I didn't enjoy it on a regular basis.

While you may feel comfortable smoking in your studio and clients may not mind, you are still breaking the law. You will never know when a client is comfortable or not with it. You also never know the kind of insecure nut job you will have that might call the cops on you.

If I worked in a high end production place, with high end clients who bring in serious $$$ (afterall, that is what you are working towards anyway), I wouldn't dare to break out smoke unless it was a collective effort and everyone was cool with it.

Also, you can make a generalization by saying "it's dumb to think that no work can get done because they are smoking pot..." But like we have said in earlier discussions, pot affects people differently. I know people that can smoke every day and carry on normally. If I did that I would be unproductive, lazy, and broke. I might develop a strong tolerance by that point and be able to work normally, but I'll never be to that point anyway.

Oh, I'm going back to Amsterdam in September...can't wait!

Yeah, with many, I can believe that - fortunately, mine is incredibly mild mannered and submissive, and will either come over and put his head on my lap to be petted, or lie down and give good vibes if I need to use both hands :D

yeah, far too many clients are allergic to dander though, and dogs shed large amounts of it, passive or not.... i already have some clients complain about the dander from the small (but fat, lol) cat that lives in the house, even though she's normally never in the studio area when clients are there, and i clean a lot to keep the dander down significantly. i've seen some clients become quite miserable.
