I replaced piece of my kit.. the throne. I got one of those First Chair deals from Tama, it has a back rest and large cut-a-ways for the legs (I read this is great for double bass playing).
I never realized how important a descent throne was before I got one. Before I was using a stardard round seat and my back hurt a lot of the time, now my back never hurts. Before I had to struggle to keep my balance and now it's easy. Before I had to force myself to keep my back straight and now it's always straight. I feel more stable too, and I can even lean back now and relax (which affects the sound of what you're playing, just by sitting back you can give yourself a more lazy "behind the beat" feel).
Anyway, I never thought this before, but the pros are not bullshitting when they say that a good throne can make all the difference.
