My Top 15 Progressive Metal Albums (Now With a Link!)

And Extreme Progressive is nothing like Progressive metal if you really know the definitions of those genres. Progressive Metal is defined by shredding, time changes, etc., and generally by some wankery, while Extreme Progressive Metal is not Progressive Metal with Extreme Metal touches but rather is Extreme Metal with elements of other progressive music (not necessarily prog metal)

There's similarities, but if Opeth and Dream Theater have enough similarities to be in the same genre, then I don't see why we need separate genres for black metal and death metal either.

Of course I did, that one is obviously far closer. He listed Morningrise and Still Life in there, care to show me how those are the same kind of music as Train of Thought or Six Degrees?

They are not as close, but you can still find similarities. I'm on the few who think those are inferior to Opeth's later productions. I was also arguing about both bands current works, not necessarily those on that list.

Yea, they start coming closer with a few songs like A Fair Judgment, and then with the addition of even more keys, a shredder guitarist, a new riffing style (although kind of a dumbed down one), and a new balance between clean and harsh vocals, they're pretty damn close now. I would definitely argue there's not enough similarities to lump them together BWP and before (and Deliverance minus A Fair Judgment).

And BWP through GR are probably my favorite 4 so you're not really alone on that one.

The sheer number of Dream Theater albums on that list is enough to make it a joke, but what's even funnier is that it doesn't even include DT's best album. Author is obviously a prog metal noob, and probably a noob to music in general.

I would say Empire is also superior to O:MC in terms of consistency, although Mindcrime has a special place in my heart for no particular reason.

If you like Empire (more particularly, the Della Brown's and Anybody Listening?'s) it's definitely worth a try. Everyone complains about over-production and too many ballads and blah blah blah but it's easily their most mature album, and the title track is crushingly heavy. People that lump it in with Hear in the Now Frontier and beyond fail.

Why do people seem to enjoy masturbating over the number of different sub-genres there can be?

They're both proggy, they're both metal. Prog Metal. Done.

Would someone mind explaining to me what the hell prog. metal is anyway? I have heard that term used a lot for many different bands that I would never have thought to be even closely related musically.

What's with the Dream Theater hate here...I love almost all of their albums.

Much of their music is incredibly shallow, repetitive and milks all the worst aspects of power balladry to it's most nauseating extreme. LaBrie is a decent power vocalist but he's far too pretentious and showy sounding to do anything with the slightest hint of real emotion. The band did a few good albums early in their career but since then they've mostly been doing mediocre rehashes of the same formula while knocking off annoying trends in popular music in an attempt to make themselves sound more "accessible" and "evolutionary". They really just need to disappear from the face of the earth already.
