Shannow's got a point. The restaurants and cafes of Leura and Katoomba contribute to about 40% of the local economy. If McDonalds opened up on the highway, that contribution would be slashed and places would go broke all over town. The local business community is keenly aware of this; the reason the cafes and restaurants here do so well is because visitors have to come into town to find something to eat, and in turn they visit the local shops and businesses. If McDonalds opened on the highway, people would go there to eat, then drive through town without stopping and Katoomba would be a ghost town in no time.
