Geschickter Schachzug: Negura Bunget haben ihre neue Mini-CD "Inarborat Kosmos” auf 734 Einheiten limitiert und machen das Ding bereits im Voraus zur Rarität – sollte man jedenfalls meinen. Hört man sich das finstere Teil dann mal an, stellt sich jedoch zeitweise die Frage, ob es der band aus Rumänien überhaupt gelingen wird, die Scheibe unters Volk zu bringen, denn so spektakulär wie angepriesen ist der „Transilvanian Black Metal“ dann auch nicht.


Ein bisschen Endzeitstimmung, zwischendurch sogar manchmal die totale Apokalypse und dazu die typischen Rifftechniken des Black Metal, nur in einer etwas langsameren Version, diese Elemente sind auf „Inarborat Kosmos“ vorherrschend, und in den beiden Stücken „Wordless Knowledge“ und „Uprising Follow“ schwappt die Stimmung auch auf den Hörer über. Das mit einigen Synthies angereicherte „Cint De Sursur“ hingegen kommt an diesen Status aber nicht ran und bietet lediglich durchschnittliche, wenn auch pechschwarze Unterhaltung. Und auch das Outro, das von fiesem Gegrunze begleitete, bösartige „Vaiet“ kommt einem irgendwie überflüssig vor, so nach dem Motto „drei Songs sind zu wenig, also klatschen wir noch irgendwas hintendran“. Vielleicht sollte man mal weniger Wert auf überflüssige Limited Editions legen und stattdessen mal dafür sorgen, dass man – und das ist bei einer Mini-CD ja fast schon vernichtend – die kurze Zeit auch mit wertigem Material füllt. Zwei gute, meinetwegen auch sehr gute Songs, reichen eben nicht aus, um hier den Kaufpreis von geschätzten 8,99€ zu rechtfertigen.

Omalaatuisen ja syvätunnelmaisen black metalin mestari, Negura Bunget, on saanut valmiiksi eräänlaisenä välityönään neljän kappaleen MCD-julkaisun, jonka painos on rajoitettu vaatimattomaan 734:ään kopioon. Edeltäjänsä lailla ainutlaatuinen ja taiteellisella sävyllä värjäytynyt teos lipuu tyylisuuntansa rajavesillä uhmaten genrerajojen kirjoittamatonta lakia.

Äärimmäisen pehmeätunnelmaisella introlla alkava levy muovautuu eteenpäin kulkiessaan yhä moninaisemmalla tavalla aina loppuunsa asti. Mukaan mahtuu niin tavanomaista black metal -rytmitystä kuin varsin progressiivisilla tavoilla kulkevaa, hyvinkin kosketinpainotteista, jopa eteeristä tavaraa. Pääosin rauhallisien tunnelmien varaan rakentuva levy kuitenkin räjähtelee ajoittain nopeampien purskahduksien kautta, mutta kuin vain jäähtyäkseen yhä uudelleen hiljaa eteneväksi laavavirraksi.

Mielenkiintoisella tavalla Inarborat Kosmos tuo mieleen Pink Floydin ja uransa puolivälissä olleen Emperorin yön mustuudessa syntyneen ristisiitoksen, joka ei kuulosta varsinaisesti isältään eikä äidiltään, mutta tuo vahvoja assosiaatoita mieleen kummastakin. Progressiivisen chillailevaa ja tunnelmarikasta äänimaisemaa maalataan paitsi metallisoitinten avulla, myös erinäisin ihmisäänin ja runsain syntikkakuvioin. Jälki on häkellyttävää.

Levyn tuotantopuolta on soundien kautta hieman hankala käsitellä, koska levy rakentuu monilta osin konelähtöisten äänien varaan. Niiltä osin kuin kitaroita on kuultavissa, on sekä niiden että rumpujen soundi miellyttävän jämäkkä ja selkeä. Laulusaralla kuullaankin äänenkäyttöä varsin runsaasti tyypillisestä rääkylaulusta ähinöihin ja tuskaisiin vingahduksiin, eikä äänenkäytön osaamista ole syytä vähätellä.

Kaikkeudessaan Inarborat Kosmos on kaunista ja aidosti omaperäistä kuultavaa, joskaan sen biisirakenteet eivät ole ehkä aivan parhaasta ja selkeimmästä päästä. Siitä huolimatta sen äärettömän huolellisesti rakennettu tunnelma pitää otteessaan ja levy kieppuu soittimessa peräjälkeen kerran jos toisenkin. Fanien iloksi levylle on päätynyt myös monenlaista multimediatavaraa muun muassa videoiden ja kuvien muodossa.

En-cas de choix avant un album 2005 très attendu, cet « inarborat kosmos » (limité à 734 exemplaires) montre un Negura Bunget au mieux de sa forme. Nos roumains continuent sur la lancée du désormais fameux « 'n crugu bradului » en proposant un black/dark metal des plus atmosphériques sur seulement 20 minutes. La construction du mini est la suivante : un titre métal de 7 minutes succédé d’un autre atmo de 3 minutes, le tout répété une fois (je précise qu’aucune blague contre les belges n’est dissimulée dans cette phrase). On pourrait alors rester sur notre faim mais il faut garder à l’esprit la qualité de l’ensemble, ajoutée à un artwork toujours très soigné et à une plage multimédia intéressante (où l’on retrouve un clip live et les paroles en anglais cette fois-ci).
« Inarborat kosmos » est très proche musicalement de son prédécesseur : on retrouve avec délice une musique à la fois sobre et élégante, privilégiant l’intelligente au bourrinage intempestif. C’est encore plus clair ici, les compositions et ambiances étant d’une extrême fluidité. Une comparaison vient alors à l’esprit : Negura Bunget est au black metal ce que Morgion est au doom. Le groupe ne donne que l’essentiel et supprime tout le superflu, permettant ainsi à la musique d’être plus lisible et pénétrante. L’accès en semble facilité, d’autant plus que la production s’avère policée et que le chant black se fait plus rare.
Néanmoins, l’intensité des titres métal reste toujours présente, les guitares et la basse n’étant heureusement pas en retrait ; leur construction est faîte sur un modèle similaire (outre la durée) en crescendo, donnant la part belle à des claviers majestueux et célestes pour une conclusion flamboyante, tout en incluant avec parcimonie quelques éléments que l’on retrouvera dans les morceaux atmo les succédant, à la fois étranges et mystérieux.
Cet enregistrement est donc loin d’être un bouche trou ; les 20 minutes s’écoulent avec un ravissement non dissimulé, tant on est facilement happé par ces ambiances provenant des Carpates. On peut dès lors être rassuré quant à la teneur du prochain longue durée, mais aussi être encore plus impatient ! En attendant, « Inarborat kosmos » fait parfaitement l’affaire.

There’s only 734 copies of Inarborat Kosmos floating around, and I’m sure they’re all gone by now. In effect, I’ll wish those of you that weren’t able to procure the latest from Negura Bunget: happy eBaying. Inarborat Kosmos is a twenty-minute EP that’ll eventually be book ended by 2002’s fantastic ’N Crugu Bradului and the group’s upcoming OM. How does the trio fare here, though? Excellent as always.

Really, this latest work from Negura Bunget is impressive in a number of ways. The artwork is stupefying, and even more so when coupled with an adequate amount of sunlight. The music within – though it doesn’t vary immensely from their previous masterworks – is laced with the eeriness that I’ve come to expect from them. The opening track, “Wordless Knowledge,” commences wonderfully and my mind drifted back to Burzum upon hearing the majestic, keyboard arrangements. Shortly following the requisite introduction, the song morphs into a primitive black metal soundscape. Still, the band’s ability to forge an unsettling atmosphere is, basically, unrivaled. And, moreover, Hupogrammos’s vox are the proverbial cream of the crop. “Cint de Sursur” supports the frightful ambience that Negura Bunget are so fond of implementing. “Uprising Follow” is back at the BM grindstone while “Vaiet” takes hints from “Cint de Sursur” and ups them with freakish wails, screams, and grunts. The conspicuous gasp – that ultimately closes the MCD – is climactic, but there’s simply no more to be heard afterwards.

Again, just to reiterate, there’s only 734 of these in existence, which means there’s no time to inwardly mull over the issue. If you fancy anything that Negura Bunget have crafted in the past, the decision to hunt down Inarborat Kosmos is one that can be made without using your brain. Don’t like these Romanians? Then how the hell did you make it this far?!

[font=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Since the highly anticipated album OM was again pushed back (now due in autumn 2005) NEGURà BUNGET is satisfying the pack’s hunger with an 4-track EP, probably picking up the theme and principle of the four again, bridging time and the gap between predecessor ’N crugu bradului and the upcoming fourth record.
Things are different on Inarborat Kosmos. Introducing Wordless Knowledge, the intro unexpectedly comes with fanfare-like trumpets and unfamiliar percussive elements. Keyboards build up dense, eerie and atmospheric soundscapes filled with darkness and melancholy. And finally the typical Black Metal art of the Romania gents breaks lose, restrained but intensive and again with the headstrong singing by Hupogrammos. Cint de sursur and Vaiet are atmospheric instrumentals with an array of well- accented percussion instruments, gongs spoken words and theatric suffering phases (Vaiet) respectively. Urprising Follow again picks up the thread of the opener connecting the different influences from both the opener and the instrumentals. [/font]

They try and combine many new stylistic means and elements without losing spiritual and mystic essence of the genre and their past. Listening to Inarborat Kosmos and thinking about the upcoming album OM I have no clue how it will turn out. Maybe this EP has to be sort of test area and OM will go back to the bands black metal roots, maybe NEGURà BUNGET will even push the limits on their new record. Anyway, Inarborat Kosmos offers 20 minutes of great black metal innovation I just recommend to everybody interested in sophisticated music. Black metal purists will be probably scared …[/font]

well, we are waiting a good offer from a label specialized in vinyl... we can't do it ourselves because we could barely sell 50 copies of our albums in vinyl, that's why we usually sell the license for this format.

Ne connaissant pratiquement pas l’œuvre de Negura Bunget avant ce mini album, je ne parlerai pas de leur musique en général mais de celle que l’on trouve ici.

L’album commence par une introduction superbe, planante, constituée d’instruments traditionnels et de claviers. Le style volontairement païen, limite viking se ressent pleinement au travers de ces quelques secondes qui débouchent sur un Black d’emblée assez complexe, majestueux et très personnel.
Les instruments utilisés redeviennent donc ceux que l’on trouve toujours dans un disque de Black (à quelques exceptions près – Profanum par exemple) : guitares, batterie et basse (que l’on entend très bien ici !)
Des nappes de claviers atmosphériques ponctuent l’album par ci par là, et deux des quatre titres sont entièrement instrumentaux, dégageant une atmosphère très étrange digne d’un bon film d’épouvante (« Cînt de Sursur »).
Le chant de Hupogrammos Disciple´s est typiquement black, limite chuchoté par moments, clair à d’autres, s’adaptant au gré de la musique sans aucun problème et permettant de faire ressortir au mieux les émotions qui se succèdent au fil des notes.
Le son de la batterie n’est pas prioritaire sur cet enregistrement. Bien placée en retrait, on n’entend que le strict minimum, assez technique tout de même, mais l’accent est très clairement mis sur les superbes nappes de claviers cosmiques et étranges. Même les guitares sont placées en retrait lorsqu’ils apparaissent.

Tout l’intérêt de cet album se situe dans l’ambiance si particulière qui s’en dégage : mi-cosmique mi-mystique, l’effet rendu est saisissant ! Le temps de 20 minutes on est porté ailleurs que dans son salon, dans de vastes forêts transylvaniennes où rôdent encore des créatures mal connues des humains.
Le dernier titre ne me contredira pas, achevant l’album sur une sorte de cri de terreur étouffé par une mort précipitée, il laissera perplexe à la première écoute…
A écouter dans le noir pour un rendu optimal ! Excellent album !

La Transilvania a quanto pare ha generato qualcosa di vicino alle sue atmosfere, tenendone lontani i clichè che l'hanno ridotta a puro turismo per vampirelli del fine settimana. "Inarboat Kosmos" è un mcd ( o EP come sarebbe più romanticamente giusto dire) dalle notevoli sfaccettature. La band rumena pur potendo essere inquadrata in una corrente black dalle forti tinte orrorifiche e atmosferiche, riesce a distinguersi per un song-writing che tutto può essere, meno che prevedibile. Ascoltandoli mi sono immaginato i primi Cradle of filth spogliati da pacchianerie neo-gotiche, con linee di chitarra meno presenti ma molto più efficaci, parti vocali più oscure ricercate ed espressive, ed un feeling marcio quanto basta a far da contraltare a cupi rimandi esoterici. Lo strano uso di suoni generati dai synth dà un ulteriore tocco di personalità ad un lavoro che lascia presagire qualcosa di veramente particolare con il prossimo full-lenght. Dopo dieci anni di gavetta forse i Negura Bunget stanno arrivando al dunque.

In attesa di concludere le registrazioni del nuovo album, che a quanto pare si stanno protraendo più di quanto previsto, i Negura Bunget danno alle stampe un mini, contenuto in un sontuoso digipack limitato a 734 copie, interlocutorio e per molti versi più sperimentale rispetto a quanto mostrato in passato. “Inarborat Kosmos” è infatti un opera di ampio respiro, imperniata su un black metal che potremmo definire avantgarde, contorniato da plumbee intromissioni in territori dark ambient. L’album può inoltre contare su una produzione molto più pulita e corposa rispetto alle precedenti release della band rumena, aspetto che discosta ulteriormente quanto contenuto in questo mini dalle composizioni del passato. “Wordless Knowledge” apre l’album con partiture tastieristiche ben evidenti che sfociano poi in un black metal oscuro e greve contorniato da passaggi più articolati che ricordano spesso i gruppi avantgarde black norvegesi di seconda generazione. Segue poi “Cint de Sursur”, una traccia strumentale dal sapore dark ambient che, obiettivamente, lascia il tempo che trova. “Uprising Follow” continua sulla falsariga della prima song abbandonandosi però quasi completamente a passaggi più intricati e dissonanti in cui il black metal passa in secondo piano, eccetto per le vocals. La song è un pò troppo lunga e pretenziosa, risultando sicuramente inferiore all’opener. Chiude l’album la seconda traccia ambient, “Vaiet”, che nulla toglie o aggiunge a quanto mostrato finora dalla band rumena. “Inarborat Kosmos” è un album fuori dai canoni a cui i Negura Bunget ci avevano finora abituato. Una prestazione godibile anche se solo a sprazzi, a causa di un’eccessiva tortuosità che porta a volte la band ad inerpicarsi in territori poco fruttuosi.

Saper rievocare le forze celesti mediante il canto, la musica... una pratica antica che, a sentire i romeni Negura Bunget, non sembra esser scomparsa del tutto. Autori inconfondibili di un black metal indefinibile, tribale, ancestrale e quant'altro si possa aggiungere, i Negura Bunget ci deliziano con un mini cd in versione digipack che è bene non disprezzarlo in attesa del nuovo full length. Per i fan del gruppo è un appuntamento immancabile, anche stavolta la band fa capire di essere su un altro livello rispetto a molti, e soprattutto mantiene quelle alchemiche coordinate i peculiarità che forse mai nessuno risucirà ad indovinare e riproporre. La magia si rinnova, l'invocazione alle più profonde forze celesti ha qui attuazione, il richiamo sciamanico ed estremamente convinto di questi stregoni dell'Est ha qualcosa di veramente magico ed attraente. Solo gli Emperor erano riusciti in qualcosa di simile, ma i Negura Bunget hanno una musica più legata alle radici della prorpia terra e dalle sue viscere riescono a mettersi in contatto con gli astri. Magia, cicli si forze che da sempre si rinnovano, niente di strano dunque, la sola cosa che cambia è che stavolta l'invocazione avviene tramite la musica black metal, e che sono i Negura Bunget ad aver aperto questo nuova via di comunicazione. Stilisticamente parlando, la band accentua quanto espresso in passato, lo perfeziona, lo elabora in modo fantastico come in "Wordless Knowledge", brano impeccabile e pieno di atmosfere che entrano dentro, dritte al petto, alla mente, allo spirito. La musica che si ammanta di antiche sacralità sotterrate e ora riemerse, ecco il segreto della proposta di un gruppo che sta pian piano raggiungendo quello status invidiabile cui già appartengono Enslaved e Borknagar, gente che è riuscita, in modo originale, a costruirsi una dimensione musicale propria. Perdetevi nei meandri più oscuri e inquietanti del cosmo, affondando sempre di più il vostro sapere nelle radici di questa terra, e così carpirete il cuore di "Inarborat Kosmos".

Mit dem Kultstatus ist es wie mit den guten Noten - beides kriegen immer diejenigen, bei denen man sich hinterher fragt: haben die sich das wirklich verdient mit dem was sie gemacht haben oder hat ihnen das jemand an die Backe gelabert? In der Pädagogik ist mittlerweile bewiesen, dass die soziale Herkunft eines Schülers Einfluss hat auf die Notengebung des Lehrers, unbewusst oder bewusst. Meines Wissens nach noch nicht bewiesen ist, dass sich Bands aufgrund ihrer Herkunft einen Kultstatus, quasi als naturgegeben, verdient haben. Dafür muss man doch schon einiges tun, und da eine Black-Metal-Band in der Regel bei ihren Hörern nicht mit kurzen Röcken, tiefen Ausschnitten, nettem Lächeln oder "sonstigen mündlichen Leistungen" (...) punkten kann, muss sie andere Argumente vorbringen.
Im Falle von "Inarborat Kosmos", das als Lückenfüller beim Warten auf das neue Album "OM" dienen soll, sind diese Argumente rar gesät. Neben einem schmucken Multi-Media-Teil, in dem man sich die Texte durchlesen, sich über die Band informieren oder dürftige Livevideos anschauen kann, bietet die Mini-CD auch noch vier Stücke und damit zwanzig Minuten neuer, exklusiver Musik. Hoffen wir dass sie exklusiv ist und das kommende Album besser ausfällt, denn die beiden vollwertigen Titel "Wordless Knowledge" und "Uprising Follow" sind zwar gut, aber mehr auch nicht. Die anderen beiden Tracks "Cînt De Sursur" und "Vaiet" sind Bindeglieder von drei bis vier Minuten, die im wesentlichen aus Soundeffekten und verhallten Schreien und damit aus Stimmung bestehen und die ich nicht als vollwertige Musikstücke werten möchte.
So reduziert sich der tatsächlich bewertbare Teil von "Inarborat Kosmos" (was ich übrigens für einen exzellenten Titel halte!) auf zwei Stücke, die so ziemlich das Sperrigste sind, das meine Anlage in diesem Jahr abzuspielen hatte. Auch wenn Negura Bunget niemals etwas mit Standards am Hut hatten - diese verzwickte, uneingängige Mischung aus düsterem Black Metal, Percussions und elektronischer Experimentierfreudigkeit liegt einfach quer im Magen und ist außerordentlich anstrengend. Schlichtere Drumpatterns, straightere Gitarren und fließendere Songstrukturen hätten die Stücke verträglicher gemacht. Hier und da hat man den Eindruck, die Band würde sich selbst überfordern mit diesem komplexen, unverständlichen Material. Anders kann man sich die Holprigkeiten und Spielfehler, meist im Schlagzeug, schlecht erklären. Komisch, auf "'N Crugu Bradului" war das anders und auch "Uprising Follow" zeigt als einziger der vier Tracks sehr gute Ansätze. Zwar ist die Platte immer noch relativ atmosphärisch und charmant, was sich allerdings bei soviel Sperrigkeit schwerlich am Stück genießen lässt.
Was bleibt ist eine exotische, schick aussehende, auf 734 Stück limitierte Digipack-Mini-CD, bei der ich wirklich nicht weiß, ob sie jemals ausverkauft sein und ob sie jemandem tatsächlich gefallen wird - oder ob sich die meisten Käufer lieber mit dem "Kultstatus" Abhilfe von einer objektiven Beurteilung schaffen werden. Ich habe den Eindruck, das bandeigene Studio hat hier zu mehr Probiererei geführt, als dem Material gut getan hätte. Ein bisschen mehr Fokus auf die Produktion und die Songdienlichkeit wären stattdessen ein Segen gewesen. Nun ja, man lernt ja ständig dazu.
