Vertebrae is very different indeed, and in a GOOD way. Everything is a MASSIVE step up.
It seems every thing Enslaved ever do is flawless and Vertebrae is no exception. Ivar & Grutle continue to produce excellent material, and Enslaved just continue to be one of the most consistent bands in metal.
Dare I say it, but I think with Vertebrae, Enslaved are establishing themselves as the progressive metal kings. Vertebrae is even better than Ruun, and I didn't think they would pull that off.
Imo Ruun introduced a larger level of atmospherics (Ruun, Heir To The Cosmic Seed), and Vertebrae continues on from that, but raises it to another level by extending on the surrounding characteristics (riffs, arpeggios and drum fills, as well as more complex bassplaying). Everything has more colour, but it is subtle, which is exactly how Enslaved have always done things.
I can't wait for that release date, I am so aching to have my real copy in my hands. One of the few bands where actually owning every release is just a MUST.
This album is complex, brilliant and an experience. Truly.
