New Katatonia

After about 5 listens I have mixed feelings about the album. The first 4 songs are incredible, but the rest of the tracks are not really catching me. It's a petty cause the album starts out so well - especially Idle Blood which is one of the most beautiful songs Kataonia have ever written imo.

I used to get them confused with Kataklysm... both were "that band that uses K when a C would suffice". This was before I had listened to either of them very much, of course...

Uh oh.. before we derail this thread..

At first listen, the whole album seems great. Not as accessible as TGCD (to me, at least) but I'm sure it'll grow with a few more spins.
Stand outs were the bonus track Ashen and the last song Departer.

Very nice kinda old-schoolish vibe on the synths! Me like..

Well, I ordered the Swedish edition last evening after about 10 listens It's a decent album for sure. Departer is one of their finest tracks in a long while!

I think the mix sounds great, but its really weird at the same time, especially the panning. Listen to the hat, you often hear it changing sides, like at the end of The Longest Year.

Anyway, album of the year for me. Maybe it will change when I'll hear the new Swallow the sun though.

+1 to the strange hihat behaviour. Track 3 has more than just "Opeth Vibe" in my opinion

he likely has an X-hat on the other side, no big mystery.

After enough listens I can say this is, in my opinion, the worst Katatonia abum (except the first 2 which I don't like). I like 4 songs, 5 top, and I can't stand songs like Idle Blood, Inheritance, Departer and I can barely listen to Nephilim because of the heavy parts... It is no way as heavy, catchy or interesting as Viva Emptiness and The Great Cold Distance. This does not seem like they took one step down, it seems like the took the whole them staircase down.

haha, I'm just so disappointed. I had such high expectations for this one, I thought it would be the album of the year for me . Evil Katatonia!
