Ok, so it was only a matter of time, right?
Someone had to start a "REVIEW THE NEW OPETH HERE" thread.
I just got it yesterday and am spinning it now at work.
So far so good. I really like the presence of the keys.
It is a release I will have to crank in the car or at home.

Anyone else have it?

I bought it when it came out. No downloading for me.

I'm not impressed. I like it more than I did at first listen, but it still seems ...contrived. It's the same Opeth elements repeated over and over to make an 11 minute song. It's cliche and seems almost like a parody of Opeth. I'm by no means an Opeth hater, they're still my favorite band. This album was just a disappointment.

At first and second listen, I am a little worried.
Nothing really stood out as memorable.
BlackWaterNymph - Like you said, a lot of repitition for the sake of creating a longer song.
I guess time will tell.

On a side note - Opeth and Nevermore are playing October 26 at House of Blues.

ND should get on that show!!!!!

We'd love to get on that show, but it's not as easy as that. ;)

Oh I know. It's a shame.
There are a ton of people who would dig you guys who just haven't had the opportunity to hear you yet.
It would be awesome to see you guys get on a big show like that.

That complaint is understandable, but it's not NEARLY as horrid in the repeating department as Deliverance. Songs like Wreath and Deliverance had about 3 riffs in each strung out to 10+ minute songs. This one has one song like that (The Grand Conjuration) but I think the first two songs are definitely some of the very best they've ever done, and I quite like some of the others (Beneath the Mire, Isolation Years, most of Reverie/Harlequin Forest).

Wow, ironic that the one part of the review sort of compares Ghost Reveries to Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son (in terms of how it is/was viewed by fans upon its release in comparison to the back catalog, etc.), since Mikael told me that he really loved the Seventh Son album, and we argued over that (I loathe that album still haha).

I haven't made up my mind about this new Opeth album. It has some really nice moments and I really like the opening track alot. I am not as instantly grabbed upon first listenings as I was with Deliverance and Blackwater Park. I'm thinking this might be one of those cases where it'll attach itself to me over time, perhaps. I've had that happen to me so many times in the past, it's why I am always hesitant to offer my "definitive" review and opinion of a cd until long after I've had time to listen to it and really absorb it. The performance aspect, needless to say, is fantastic as it always is with Opeth. Production is a bit different in spots, and is taking some getting used to but again, that's not a bad thing necessarily. I'm going to be very curious to see where this album stands with fans six months from now. There's been so much debate and what have you about this album long before anyone even heard it! I am very eager to see and hear this new material in the live setting to see how it translates there.

Wow, I am very glad with this new Opeth album; because for me it combines the old and the new Opeth in many ways. I hear stuff they did on Still Life, like the second part of Atonement. I hear even older Opeth from Morningrise in the second part of Reverie/Harlequin Forest, while the first part of that song reminds me of the way they sounded during Deliverance.

The first track Ghost of Perdition has all the elements of Opeth combined and the song makes sense; it's not a pile of riffs expanded over 10 minutes. I guess you should play this album lots of times and let it sink in and see what it does to you six months from now, like Larry said.

I listen to it with my eyes closed and this album is just great; it definately beats Deliverance (although A Fair Judgement is my favourite Opeh song) and for me it stands out like Blackwater Park; my favourite Opeth-album till this one.

It's just that Opeth grew with every album and they perfected their stile with the last two albums (Damnation not included). So there's actually nothing to do better for the guys; and in terms of suprises and stuff, this album has less than in the past; I agree. But the songs are better, Mikael sings beter than ever and the album takes you into a stream of emotions!!!

So I am very curious how Opeth will do this stuff live and I hope to see them soon!

Oh, and I'd love to be on that Opeth bill at House of Blues. You have to have the right connections to get on those shows here, and unfortunately for us, we're lacking a bit in that department.

I just heard that PELICAN is going to be on some dates of that OPETH tour.
Anyone here know those guys? I have never seen or heard them.
I think they are all instrumental.
I know they are from Chicago, so I thought I would mention it.

Ah, fuck. Well odds are that Pelican is opening the Chicago show then.

Pelican is decent from what little I've heard. It's, from what I can gather, instrumental progressive stoner rock. I can actually see Mikael and company digging what Pelican does to an extent so I guess it makes sense that they're on the bill. As for how many people in the audience will be into it, I can't be too sure. Oh well.
