After checking on the Symphony X forum today, I noticed that they instituted a ban on discussing the new album until the release date. I am respecting the wishes of the band, and bands like Dream Theater and Kamelot who do not wish their new albums to be discussed before they are released.. I am not going to ban people from the forum or anything, but I will delete any postings on the forum that are discussing new albums before release--

This is not meant as a statement against downloading or anything of the sort. This is merely out of respect for the bands in the business who might someday appear at my show:)

Good call man!

As someone who actively does not download, I sometimes long for the days in the mid to late '90s when we used to discuss what albums might be sounding like based on rumor and speculation. Now everyone knows what it sounds like 6 months beforehand :-)

Sympony X's V is a classic example of this and possibly the album most damaged in sales by internet downloading in music history. That album was widely available for download (this was back when we had all the downloading sites profiting with advertising dollars off all the free music) a full six months before it was even released!

By the time V was released, nobody was even talking about it on any of the message boards. There was definately a "been there, done that... when's the next album?" vibe going on. If I were Symphony X, I'd have been pissed.

Hey Dave, I think it is very respectful and cool of you to go along with the wishes of the bands. Especially if what you are hinting at means that the powerhouse that is Symphony X may be one day featured at BARfest.

With this said..........what about discussions of songs from new releases that have been released from the band? Is it going to be deleted if say Adagio (just an example) releases a couple new songs for listening before the album comes out (such as SX just did with "The Serpents Kiss" and "Set the World on Fire"), and I post say a link to the new songs and discuss what I think of them? I'd like to respect the bands as well but I would think that discussing the tunes that they chose to release to the public would be alright. Just clarifying.

As far as SymX's wishes, they are fine with people discussing the song(s) that they themselves make officially available to the fans. Right now, The Serpent's Kiss is the only song authorized by the band/management/labels to be online; one or more vendors put up Set the World on Fire without the band's okay, & that's currently being dealt with. There will be one or more songs added to their website/MySpace in the upcoming weeks before the release, though.

That said, this is Dave's forum & it's up to him to choose the rules he wishes to enforce here. :)

Ok, Cool. Thanks for the info. Can't wait for the other song to be added to their site(s).

The Michael testifies!

I have gotten into some pretty intense arguments over the years with people on the subject of music piracy.

The most recent was with a close friend who managed to get his hands on MP3s of the new Symphony X album and wanted to tell me about it. I actually put a proverbial gag on him because I'm so against even being influenced by the leak! It's a tough argument with him because he'll buy multiple legitimate copies of the album once it is in general release. (He's sincere, too -- he owns over 1,500 prog metal CDs.) I even quoted from our dear Jax's recent MySpace blog on the turmoil the band and its management was and is going through, to no avail......

Nevertheless, I do try, and sometimes I tend to make folks uncomfortable with my unwavering stance... This in spite of my humble "I haven't always been such an angel" position on the subject.

Dave, I have great respect for your great respect for the bands and their labels. You are a good man.
