All this is correct. However, historically sack production nosedives after age 30. While I think Ware will still get double digit sacks for the next couple of years if he stays healthy (a big if), 20 sacks is not worth 20 million to the Cowboys at this point. Time to get younger, time to start clearing up the cap.
I don't see how it's a "big if". He's had some minor wear and tear throughout the last two years, but he's played through it and none of it is chronic. And the guy has missed three games his entire career. Wishful thinking on your part. Now whether Lee can stay healthy? THAT'S a "big if".
And sacks are a fairly overrated stat in football. Until this last season Ware was consistently one of the most productive pass rushers in the NFL. This year he was playing banged up on a shit defense with a shit scheme. I wouldn't be surprised if he put up monster numbers playing across from Von Miller.
And all this is false. Ware has never been a real leader in the huddle or lockerroom, a long time knock on a classy guy. Lee is and has been the leader of this defense for a couple of years now. Ware might have been the best player on the roster in any given year, but I wouldn't call him the cornerstone. That would be, for better or worse, Tony Romo. The quarterback is the cornerstone on any team that has even a decent one. As far as the money goes, the 'Boys already got under the cap, and cutting Ware and Austin clears up an additional 12+mil this year. Not megabucks, but enough to sign a couple of B+ free agents at non "skill" positions. Marinelli would rather have a line of 8 B quality linemen than an A+ and a bunch of Cs. Particularly when Mr A+ is developing durability questions and is already over the hill.
Fair enough on the leadership issue, though I'm sure for many young players he led by example.
And he WAS a cornerstone. There's not just one cornerstone to a franchise, just like there isn't one cornerstone on a building. I'll buy Romo being the most important player on the team due to his position, but Ware was next.
And 12 million is something to work with, but not much. They have to be careful (or at least should be careful, this is Jerry we're talking about) about signing anyone to a long term deal because they have Dez Bryant and Tyron Smith's contracts coming up soon and both guys are gonna want mega contracts.
Chip to the NFC East after signing Sproles
I'm not upset with this move, but I also don't think it's a slam dunk signing. RB was already the deepest spot on the roster, and with McCoy on the team, will there really be enough snaps for Sproles? And clearly, the guy's lost a step. On the other hand, I can definitely see him helping out in the return game and I could also see the Eagles creating crazy mismatches by having Sproles, McCoy, Maclin and Jackson all on the field at the same time. That's a ton of speed.
