NFL 2014

All this is correct. However, historically sack production nosedives after age 30. While I think Ware will still get double digit sacks for the next couple of years if he stays healthy (a big if), 20 sacks is not worth 20 million to the Cowboys at this point. Time to get younger, time to start clearing up the cap.

I don't see how it's a "big if". He's had some minor wear and tear throughout the last two years, but he's played through it and none of it is chronic. And the guy has missed three games his entire career. Wishful thinking on your part. Now whether Lee can stay healthy? THAT'S a "big if".

And sacks are a fairly overrated stat in football. Until this last season Ware was consistently one of the most productive pass rushers in the NFL. This year he was playing banged up on a shit defense with a shit scheme. I wouldn't be surprised if he put up monster numbers playing across from Von Miller.

And all this is false. Ware has never been a real leader in the huddle or lockerroom, a long time knock on a classy guy. Lee is and has been the leader of this defense for a couple of years now. Ware might have been the best player on the roster in any given year, but I wouldn't call him the cornerstone. That would be, for better or worse, Tony Romo. The quarterback is the cornerstone on any team that has even a decent one. As far as the money goes, the 'Boys already got under the cap, and cutting Ware and Austin clears up an additional 12+mil this year. Not megabucks, but enough to sign a couple of B+ free agents at non "skill" positions. Marinelli would rather have a line of 8 B quality linemen than an A+ and a bunch of Cs. Particularly when Mr A+ is developing durability questions and is already over the hill.

Fair enough on the leadership issue, though I'm sure for many young players he led by example.

And he WAS a cornerstone. There's not just one cornerstone to a franchise, just like there isn't one cornerstone on a building. I'll buy Romo being the most important player on the team due to his position, but Ware was next.

And 12 million is something to work with, but not much. They have to be careful (or at least should be careful, this is Jerry we're talking about) about signing anyone to a long term deal because they have Dez Bryant and Tyron Smith's contracts coming up soon and both guys are gonna want mega contracts.

Chip to the NFC East after signing Sproles

I'm not upset with this move, but I also don't think it's a slam dunk signing. RB was already the deepest spot on the roster, and with McCoy on the team, will there really be enough snaps for Sproles? And clearly, the guy's lost a step. On the other hand, I can definitely see him helping out in the return game and I could also see the Eagles creating crazy mismatches by having Sproles, McCoy, Maclin and Jackson all on the field at the same time. That's a ton of speed.

Sounds like the Cards are in on Ted Ginn Jr. Would definitely be a nice addition to the KR and Receiver corps. I'm also happy with the Veldheer signing. In Keim I trust! lol

Veldheer was a great signing for the Cards. LT has been a weakness for years. Getting Veldheer and Cooper should really improve their offense. I still have no idea why the Raiders didn't resign him.

I think you're underestimating him. He's going to open up the field even more for them. I think the 4 of them on the field is going to be scary.

The Colts signed Nicks!

Now if they could only get Luck to stop throwing so many interceptions in the playoffs.

Eh, he's 31 and on the decline. Still a serviceable player but I don't think he changes the landscape of the NFCE. I think he can give us some scattered big plays throughout the season and be a nice change up on 3rd down, but I don't expect him to be a staple of the offense.

Nicks is a good signing for the Colts, especially for only 1 year. I wouldn't want to give him a long term contract considering how often he gets injured.

Don't know if this will only be funny to me as an Eagles fan, but I think this is the way 90+% of NFL fans think about free agency.

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/sports/eagles/Open-letter-to-Jeffrey-Laurie-and-Howie-Rosen-Stop-messing-up-free-agency.html

After two days of free agency, I have listened to concerns on Twitter, and have decided to compose a letter to Mr. Jeffrey Laurie and Mr. Howie Rosen voicing our collective displeasures.

Dear Mr. Laurie and Mr. Rosen,

I have been an Eagles fan for more than 30 years, and after 2 days of free agency, I am very angry about the Eagles ensistance on being cheap. I'm going to list my reasons for angerment on bullet point form:

• The Eagles safetys are horrible and we replaced one horrible safety with another one. Patrick Chung had a -7.0 in Pro Football Focus and Malcolm Jenkins had a -6.0. That means Jenkins is -1.0 worse. Jarious Byrd was rated at a +9.9, which is more. We should have got Byrd instead. Stop being cheap. Also, the Eagles need to sign more safetys so Jenkins has to win a starting job. Send him a message that we are not running a country club hear.

• We should have also got DaMarcus Ware. He had a lot of sacks against teh Eagles and he could of sacked the Cowboys a lot instead. Also, he knows all the Cowboys plays because he played there a long time. He can tell the Eagles all the Cowboys plays.

• We have to get Jimmie Graham. Give him whatever he wants.

• Why don't we have a fullback? If we had a fullback, the first guy that would hit Shady would be blocked by the fullback instead and Shady would get 2 more yards per carry. Sign whoever the best fullback in the NFL is.

• We should have also got Daryl Reevis. The Patriots got him for $12,000,000. We should have gave him $12,000,001. Its not too late though. We should give them Brandon Graham for Reevis and a 5th round pick. That way they get Graham for almost nothing more than what they had yesterday, and we get Reevis. Win-win.

• Bryce Brown fumbles every time he gets the ball. I think someone said he was better than Bo Jackson, so other teams will think he's good. Miami has a new GM so they won't know that he's not that great yet. We should trade him to the Dolphins for Deion Jordan bacause Deion played for Chip and Chip likes him.

• We still don't have a tall receiver, and don't say Riley because he's slow and is only good bacause of Chip. Draft Kevin Benjamin from Florida State.

• Jason Kelcy is too small. We should sign Alex Mack to give him compatition.

• I will admit you did a good job on getting Brian Brayman. He tackled a guy without his helmet and he seems awesome. We need more guys like that. Like Jarad Allen. When he sacks guys he does the Cowboy rope thing. I know that DEs are sopposed to be able to drop into covrage in Billy's defense, but that's not true. Fletcher Cox never drops into covrage so Jarad Allen won't have to either.

Please do all of the above or I'm won't be an Eaglea fan anymore. Seriusly Jeff, you and Howie Rosen have like $60 million in cap space and are defense sucks. Also, you better draft 11 Pro Bowlers or I'ma gonna be soooooo pissed.

Sincerely,

Jimmy

Dallas bringing in both Allen and Melton today. Melton would be a solid pickup and the price can probably be right. Allen would be a solid addition, but based on the various information out there, he wants a contract figure and length too much for his age (same problem as Ware) and the Cowboys' needs.

Cowboys pick up Weeden for next to nothing to be insurance against an Orton retirement. Solid depth move. Still waiting for word on the Dline visit outcomes.

I'm fine with judging him. If he wants to get loaded, fine. But there's no excuse for not getting a cab/limo/chauffeur when you're a fucking billionaire.

It will be interesting to see how Goodell decides to punish him.

No excuse, but it's not like he's the only one who's ever done it. Putting him on a pedestal is kind of silly, what can Goodell even do?

Of NFL owners, he is (at least in recent memory). Goodell can punish him under the league conduct policy, just like the players. And it will probably have to be a harsh punishment (or at least seemingly harsh) to match the punishments that have been given to players and coaches.

Giants totally overpaid for DRC. Amazing athelete, but no heart at all.

Cowboys ink Melton to a 1 year deal with a 3 year option. Haven't seen the $ figures but with that sort of set up and the newly disciplined appearance of the front office I imagine it is quite frugal at its base, probably heavily incentive laden. This signing has Marinelli all over it, since Melton doesn't look necessarily like a "Garrett guy" on the surface (off the field issues). I don't know anything about his motor, which is probably Garrett's primary interest.

Allen looks unlikely, which is fine with me.

Giants blowing through some money. Looks like no one learned the lesson from the Eagles and Cowboys of recent times.

I hope not. Sure he's an overpaid primadonna, but he's also a guy defensive coodinators have to plan around. And we're not gonna get good value for him. Then, if he's gone we're one Maclin injury away from Cooper being our #1 :/

Also, the Eagles are by no means strapped for cash, so it really doesn't matter if they're overpaying a player or two.
