NFL 2014

Parerra just explained it on the post game show. Bryant didn't perform a football act before the ball was dislodged by the ground. That's the rule and it's been the rule for a long time. It doesn't matter if you and your random Packers friend don't understand the rule.

He performed a football act.

1. Player secures control of the ball in his hands or arms prior to it touching the ground. The ball touching the ground while controlled is ok so long as the ball doesn't move in his grasp significantly.
2. Touches in bounds with either both feet, or any other body part not including his hands.
3. After 1 & 2, he must maintain control of the ball long enough to perform any act common to the game. Long enough to pitch it, pass it, advance with it, or avoid or ward off an opponent, etc.
If he completes those three actions before he is going to the ground it is a completion. If he is already going to the ground before all three are completed, then the following additional condition applies:

4. He must maintain control of the ball throughout the process of contacting the ground.
...
Our receiver is again at the 1. He catches the ball with 2 feet down. He manages to lunge for the goal line and the ball breaks the plane. While he did go to the ground in making the lunge.... the act of lunging is his football act that completes the 3rd criteria so it is a completion and a touchdown. (This one is an actual example case from the NFL rule book.)

So basically if he had crossed the goalline it's a catch....but apparently not if he doesn't? Ridiculous.

Just because the rule sucks doesn't mean it shouldn't be enforced correctly. By the book that was the right call. Dallas was the recipient of all the major calls up to that point, also. Phantom pass interference in the end zone against Tramon Williams and then penalizing Lang in that scrum (no penalties should've been called on that).

Yeah, the ball hit the ground - but the ground can't cause a fumble. Bryant had complete control of the football with 2 feet down + a step and stretched for the goalline. If the actual wording of the rules makes that somehow an incompletion then that is a stupid rule.

Edit: The 4th down play aside, Dallas had plenty of chances to sort of close it out earlier and didn't, and then gave up a TD on 3rd and a mile. GB oline did a good job of protecting Rodgers. It was a good game, and this loss doesn't hurt me, with the recent injuries stacking up and Seattle really turning it on I wasn't expecting a win in Seattle. Next year is looking bright though.

ground didn't cause a fumble. it was ruled incomplete pass

He didn't do #3 until the ball had been dislodged. That was obvious from the replays.

He lunged while basically flat on the ground?

#1. Bryant lunged. By the rule it's a catch.....except maybe if he doesn't cross the goalline? Inquiring minds want to know.

#2. Phantom PI? No penalty for the late hit away from the ball by Lang? Please. The penalty wasn't for the scrum, the scrum was about the hit. How about no-call on Matthews lunging at Romos knees well after the pass?

Ultimately though lack of pass rush, especially in the 2nd half, with Rodgers having less than 100% leg was the worst thing for Dallas. I expect that to get fixed this offseason. 1st order of business though is resigning Marinelli. Murray can walk if someone other team wants to break the bank on him, not a huge loss.

Romo also played really well aside from taking some coverage sacks that where totally unnecessary.

That was a missed call against Romo there, yes. Missed calls are far less impactful than wrong calls though. Lang was just protecting his player who was getting gang tackled after the whistle. Generally a non call.

The play was whistled dead and Hayden had just gotten there/ only had a hand on him. Totally unnecessary. If Lang had pulled up it would probably have been a no call.

I'm not going to say the refs "cost us the game" because there would still be plenty of time for the Packers to get a field goal at a minimum, and Dallas was having trouble getting the Pack off on 3rd down the whole second half (none bigger than the TD on 3rd and long). But Bryant clearly lunged for the endzone, which is a "football act".

End of story.

Again, remember the Calvin Johnson play. You have to hold on to the ball during the act the entire time. The "lunge"/fall is part of the act. That is all.

The whole thing is a football act. You have to hold on to the ball when going to the ground. It's really simple and it's amazing you're refusing to see it.

Technically Johnson (the ball) was going to the ground. I don;t like it, but that's what it is.

I'm not as much of a homer as you are. Not even close really.

You have to secure the ball yes. But if you make a football act the pass is completed and now we move on to rules for a ball carrier. Lunging is a football act. It is really simple. If it's debatable whether he was lunging, then we don't have clear unquestionable evidence for an overturn, so it should still stand.

Looking at comments on various posts about it on the web/social media, the general gist has been:

Fans of any team other than Lions/other NFC East teams: That was a catch.

NFC East team fans and Lions: lol.

Hardly homing it here.

Speak of the devil, Odell Beckham via Twitter:

I by no means cheer for Dallas but I have no idea what or how thts not called a catch . Thts a joke

Respect.

Colts D really stepped up. Their Oline too.

Nice to see Nicks make some plays.

Ouuuuff the Broncos were 4/16 on third down

Luck vs Rodgers would be great
