Yeah the proceedings were odd, but chalk it up to an ad hoc crew....and it's not Ed Hochuli. I don't know about the Dez thing, the rule is:
Article 3, Section 3h:
Removal of his helmet by a player in the field
of play during a celebration or during a confrontation
with a game official or any other player.
He already had it off, he didn't take it off, so.....Technicality?
The officiating was bad throughout the game, and mostly in favor of the Lions. I lost track of how many times Pereira said either a call was bad, or that a no-call should have been a call. Having a former ref on tap is probably the best innovation I've seen in game coverage.
Dallas couldn't handle the blitz almost the entire first half and it really reminded me of that game against the Vikings in '09 (and Romo said the same thing after the game). Difference this time is Romo protected the ball. Aikman pointed out his throwing hand got crunched on one of the early sacks, and then a lot of his incomplete passes were nosediving short. I don't know if that was the reason but Romo said he was specifically trying to make sure that if the receiver couldn't catch it, no one else could either. Who knows.
Garrett coached to win, and going for it on 4th and 6 was 10x gutsier than the goal line play, although given what happened to GB in the same situation it still took some stones to run at that line in that situation. On the other side, Caldwell coached to lose not going for it on 4th and 1 after the controversial call/nocall. As Easterbrook would say "angered, the football gods pushed the punt immediately out of bounds, and then later rewarded Garrett's decision".
Lawrence almost became Leon Lett 2.0, was really happy to see him stripsack and recover to close things out.
