Lots of big moves this year all over the place, some underdogs of the last few years are going to be right up there with the big boys.

Vancouver looks like a strong contender going into the season, as well as Chicago, Edmonton, Toronto and Philadelphia.

Anyone up for some prediction time?

I know you live in Canada and you probably get the Leafs jammed down your throat whether you like them or not, but they just don't have enough offense to be considered a strong contender. I'd say Edmonton is a stretch as well.

I expect my Flyers to be good as usual, but as long as the refs continue to ignore the rules for the Penguins (6 men on the ice for twenty seconds in a finals game, Malkin not being suspended after an instigator penalty in the last 5 minutes of a game), they have to be the favorite.

The west is tough to call. Detroit, Calgary, Chicago could come out of the west. I would include the Canucks, but that Olympic road game stretch is going to hurt them. I would also include San Jose, but they always forget how to play once April comes along. In the east Pittsburgh, Philly, Washington, or maybe Boston.

They have Gaborik.... Yea, they still suck. He's too injury prone...

As a "Canadian," or, I should say, as a Westerner, no one here gives a rats ass about Montreal, Toronto, or Ottawa... BC are all for Vancouver Canucks... You ask anyone on the west coast, and we'll tell ya where to shove it if you mention any of the eastern teams. We're actually some of the most die-hard fans you'll meet. You mention the '94 Playoffs, and people here will either cry or punch you in the face... even 15 years later.

The Olympic stretch will definitely test the Canucks' metal... but I also think it won't mean nearly as much as people are assuming it will. It isn't the playoffs, and if they get a really strong start to the season, even if they were to loose a bunch of games (for instance, Canucks had a 9 game home stand loosing streak last year, but still won the division) it won't hurt their chances in the playoffs.

Calgary won't go anywhere, their team has no more depth than it did last year. Chicago has a strong young squad. Coming out of last year's playoffs, the likes of Hossa might give them that veteran edge they'll need. Detroit is always a strong team, haven't missed the playoffs in something like 18 years... but if Osgood goes down, they have Cloutier to fall back on... that might really cause problems. Not that Osgood was ever any good anyway.

Philadelphia is a big, strong team and this year they're looking to be a menacing force from the east. East-side doesn't have many teams to compete with.

Toronto has the new swedish goalie, Gustavasson, who is absolutely incredible... plus with Brian Burke at the helm, they're looking strong.

Edmonton has Pat Quinn... who knows what he's doing. If this year they don't have it, over the nexst coupld they definitely will.

I mean Oilers and Maple Leafs? that's a lol. there's no chance in hell any of them are contenders. I don't even think they will make the play-off actually.
I see the Red Wings as favorites once again.
oh and yeah, the Flyers are nice and strong except they have Emery/Boucher in the net... not exactly a SC duo. also the Blackhawks almost the same situation with Huet. both teams are very deep though.

I'd LIKE to see the Stars not suck but I have serious doubts that will happen. I called Pittsburgh last season but I haven't paid enough attention to make a decent prediction this time around.

Fuck the Red Wings, tho.

I think the Flyers and Pens are going to battle all season long in that division, and Boston will also make some noise in the East. San Jose is always a good bet in the West, but they never seem to put it all together when it counts....you know Detroit is going to be there and Chicago is the up-and-coming team, so I think we are in for a great season. My surprise team is the Tampa Bay Lightning...Tocchet has had time to put his stamp on the team and Vinny Lecavalier is healthy and primed for a big year!
