Non-gay bro thread a.k.a. Random offtopic stuff.

Sorry but that is arcane knowledge.

DT has been posting a lot of Moment nostalgia on their social media. Makes me think they're gearing up for a new album soon.

I appreciate the last 2 years feel more like 20, but I'm not sure it's posible to be nostalgic for an album that came out 2 years ago :D November 2020 to be exact, so actually slightly less than 2 years. Would also be very quick for another album, considering there were 3 years between Construct and Atoma and 4 years between Atoma and Moment.

Anyhow, Covid lockdown nostalgia aside, here's today's big ten (spoiler, no Mambo No.5, but I want to download it now).

Edge of Thorns - Ravenland (2004) - the title-track of the album. Don't hear this album talked about much but it's really good, very unique atmosphere and vocals. Heavy/melodic metal.

Adventus - Sólo Uno Más (2021) - the lyrics are in Spanish so I don't understand them, but I like the song anyway. Pretty nice power/melodic metal with an almost 80s feel - can be synth heavy.

Nobou Uematsu / FFVIII - Liberi Fatali (1999) - FFVIII has a pretty sick intro, and this track is great too.

Revolution Renaissance - Last Night on Earth (2008) - this was the band Timo Tolkki started when he departed Stratovarius. I didn't really like most of the "New Era" album, but I absolutely loved this track. It's my second most played track ever on last.fm, although that does mainly cover 2006 - 2009. Nonetheless I listened to this song a lot back in the day. From memory this was originally a Stratovarius song ported over to RR, and I believe there's a demo floating around with Timo Kotipelto on vocals, albeit with different lyrics.

Hitomi / Code Geass - Stories (2006) - one way for a series to elevate above others is to have an epic soundtrack, and Code Geass certainly delivers on that front. Lots of songs from this show on my playlist.

Two-Mix / Gundam Wing - Just Communication (1995) - An iconic track if you're a fan of GW, and probably pretty solid if you're into mid-90s J-Pop (I'm not). One of the first big files I downloaded from the internet was a video of the Japanese intro to GW (the UK version didn't show the intro, not sure a dub version was even made). It was about 50mb and probably took about 6 hours to download, for about 45 seconds of video. Good times.

Darkthrone - Grave With a View (1990) - Soulside Journey was Darkthrone's debut album, their one death metal record before they switched to black metal. IIRC the band don't like the album. Personally, I think it's awesome. I'm not typically a fan of death metal but this album just clicks for me. "So what if I'm fucking insane? I'll fucking kill you anyway". Can't argue with that.

Arch Enemy - My Apocalypse (2005) - meh, this album kind of sucks imo and I'm not a fan. Not even sure why it's on my playlist.

Wishbone Ash - Throw Down the Sword (1972) - Honestly I have no idea how I came across this track or why I downloaded it. It's the one and only song I have from this band, although seemingly they're fairly well known. Wiki says "Wishbone Ash are noted for their extensive use of harmony twin lead guitars" so I can only assume somehow I was led to them for this reason, but I have none of their other tracks, which is odd because I actually really like this one. Maybe I'll listen to some more of their stuff at some point.

Sonata Arctica - Shy (2000) - nice little ballad. SA before they turned to shit, and when Kakko could still sing properly.

Slightly different list game to keep myself entertained, I'm going to go through the songs on my phone from A - Z and name my top 15 from each letter of the alphabet. Not all at once, obviously. I probably won't have 15 for some letters, like X or Z. These will all be sick af songs so of course I recommend to listen to all of them.

Edit: Extra songs added to some letters where there was surplus from other categories (eg J, X)

I do have a bit of a soft spot for early 2000s pop-punk, although admittedly I never expected IF to try their hand at it. Good old Howard. There's a minor link between Sum 41's Does This Look Infected Album and IF - Tom Lord-Alge mixed "The Hell Song", and his brother Chris would go on to mix the Clayman re-recordings. I guess we know who the more talented brother is.

If somebody asked me what my all time favorite song was, and I had to pick one, it would be this one.

Dark Saga as a whole is an excellent concept album. Albums that attempt concepts can often come off as tryhard and unnatural, but Iced Earth did a great job with this album as a whole. Obviously helps if you know the Spawn lore beforehand! A Question of Heaven and I Died For You ae my two absolute faves from the album, both slower tracks but pack a real punch if you understand the story being told.

I'm going to say something unpopular. Only for the Weak.

If I was forced to choose OFTW would be a candidate for me as well. It was the track that got me into IF and really metal as a whole, so it has to be in the conversation from my perspective. Obviously this kind of question is extremely unique to the indiividual though, so answers are bound to vary wildly from person to person.

I'm a bit disappointed that the S does not include Satellites by Rise Against. Just a bit.

Well, the simple reason for that is I haven't listened to the Endgame album :D if it's good I'll give it a listen though.

It's my favourite one. More melodic than the rest of their discography (and it's a band that I like a lot). And this song is on my top five songs ever.

Sounds good. I really need to catch up on what RA have been up to since 2008, as I think Appeal to Reason is the last album of theirs I listened to.

Crunching the data I'm slightly surprised to see Colony behind Reroute, however, looking at what I've left out on each of the albums it's probably accurate. It's very small differences between the albums, ultimately, but it basically goes:

1st: Whoracle/Clayman (8 each)
2nd: TJR/Reroute (7 each)
3rd: Colony (6)
4th: Come Clarity/SOAPF (5 each)
5th: STYE (2)

My peak years in terms of favourites are between 1999-2004, which isn't wholly surprising. 2002 is the absolute peak year, but again unsurprising considering Damage Done, Natural Born Chaos and Reroute all came out in that year. Not to mention Freedom Call's Eternity and Dream Evil's Dragonslayer. Power Metal comes out as my top genre overall with 168/470 tracks, and MDM comes second with 101/470. Not exactly a shocking revelaton there. The scores would be a bit closer if I classed IF as MDM post-2002, rather than Alt Metal, but not by that much.

I have a favourite track for every year from 1986 to the present day, but 2009 and 2015 in particular are horrible years. I have barely anything in my favourites from either. In fact, not a single metal track for 2015, only Lyra by Zwei which is J-Pop. Of the peak years 2005 fares the worst... but then it wasn't a great year in terms of my favourite bands. No IF album, DT's Character is a really good album but I wouldn't say I have any major favourites from it (The New Build aside). I don't like Soilwork's Stabbing the Drama. Freedom Call's The Circle of Life wasn't bad but wasn't great either. No album from Dream Evil that year. Arch Enemy's Doomsday Machine was mostly ass gravy (imho). Kamelot's Black Halo had a couple of great songs on it, but otherwise it was a precusor to their decline. Lots of disappointments for me in 2005.

As far as MDM is concerned IF are hugely ahead, followed by DT, then Soilwork, then Arch Enemy. Even factoring in that I counted everything IF did post-2002 as Alt Metal, not MDM. Using that as a splitting system 40 of my IF favourites are from the MDM (1994-2002) era, with 12 from the post-MDM era.

So yes I basically did this as a data exercise, and I'm sure everybody has had as much fun as me. COOL DATA STORY BRO.

Dreamt that Dark Tranquillity put out a 7-song album called Arkadian in 2018 in collaboration with some video game company (Bungie, I think). It had next to no promotion, no music videos, wasn't on any streaming services, they never ended up playing any of the songs live, and they never got asked about it in interviews. The album art was very simple -- a shot of the band's touring lineup superimposed over an image of deep space. It was basically a combination of The Gallery and Character in terms of sound and was pretty incredible.
