Non-gay bro thread a.k.a. Random offtopic stuff.

The only experience I really have with Gloryhammer is their old singer doing a guest spot with Nanowar of Steel, which was entertaining. Other than that, I haven't had the desire to check them out I guess.

You'd have to be quite into Power Metal to really appreciate them, as they fully embrace the cheesy nature of the genre. I respect bands who own that, rather than trying to pretend it isn't, but yeah... I can understand someone who isn't particularly into the genre having little interest in them. Even I, as a Power Metal fan, typically only spend time with a handful of songs per Gloryhammer album. I would say it's like that for a lot of the more traditional PM bands I've listened to. Stuff like Freedom Call's Eternity or Fellowship's debut album are the exceptions rather than the norm, in terms of genuinely enjoying and being engaged from start to finish.

I completely forgot about Night in Gales in the last few years, turns out they've been putting albums out steadily since. Focus on melodies and not so much riffs but the style of leads, and more importantly, lead guitar tone and production is really to my liking. What a fun and enjoyable listen throughout the entire album, even if not original at all.

Night in Gales are a very under-the-radar MDM band, their albums from the 90s are excellent if you enjoy that style of MDM. I really like both Towards the Twilight and Thunderbeast. They lost their way a little in the 2000s, but the last three albums especially have been really strong. Back to da rootz.

Holy fucking shit, they actually did melodeath for the first time since 2000 (I’m not counting The Living Infinite, that shit was not MDM)— At least discounting the vocals, anyways. And it’s surprisingly great too! Overgivenheten did basically nothing for me, with only the preview of Nous Sommes(?) on social media exciting me— Before it was tuned up half a step to sound like a standard Soilwork melody instead of something almost bluesy, anyway. This is a seriously welcome change.

I did find myself constantly wishing for ‘99 Björn to start screaming even though that is impossible, but a man can dream. I think he’s a fantastic vocalist now, but old Björn is simply one of my favorite vocalists period. Fantastic song though.

I first thought you were exagerating when reading you while at work without having listened to the new song.

But no, it's really a return to violence with straight forward kind of riffing just like what they were doing in the past and what DZ are famous for :kickass:

A great surprise.

Ohh, very nice from Soilwork. I had basically no interest in Overgivenheten, which was a shame as I really, really liked Verkligheten. This song sounds great, though. A good mixture of their older stuff and some of the newer stuff. If the new album is in the same vein then it's looking good.

As with many of the vocalists from that era, that style of screaming is sadly just not sustainable long-term. Speed made the right choice to change style, and he still sounds good, but I do miss that early era screaming style. Totally understandable that the guys from that era don't do it anymore though. Listen to Lindberg these days - totally fucked, because he either couldn't or wouldn't change his vocal style.

On the plus side, Speed continues to be one of the best clean vocalists in the metal sphere.

Do you guys like the Finnish melodic death metal band Mors Principium Est?

The ex-main composer just released an album under his own name and it's amazing :

I wonder what his ex bandmates think about this album since it's exactly the music we would expect from the next MPE album to come :kickass:

On the other hand, new Ensiferum album is rather weak (just like anything they've done since From Afar unfortunately)

They really can't compete anymore with Wintersun in terms of epicness.

Edit: 2nd listen through headphones was a lot more enjoyable than the first one through speakers. The songs are fast, there are far less weird and boring prog moments with shitty clean vocals from the bassist, plus the production is excellent and artwork is pleasant too.

So initially, I wanted to give it a 5/10 since I've been used to be disappointed with Ensiferum for a long time now, but this one is actually a step up in the right direction.

(I just need to accept they'll never reach a From Afar level of epicness anymore and that's all)

7/10

That Andy Gillion album sounds pretty great. It's got a really interesting mix of Power Metal alongside heavier MDM-ish elements. Definitely going to give that a proper listen soon.

Ensiferum have always just been "OK" for me. I do like them, but I wouldn't say I really love any album of theirs. Very solid band in general though

Cemetery Skyline album is out.

I think it's rather cool and catchy, the best song for me being In Darkness which is a true hymn as far as I'm concerned :kickass:

Regarding the rest of the album, there's nothing exceptionnal though.

7/10 (since it's totally "bonus" in that sense that nobody expected this band to take form and to deliver good gothic rock music like this)

That about sums up my thoughts on it.

Liars & Thieves reminds me of something that could have come off Will to Power - which is a positive to me as it's my favourite modern AE album. People get really hung up on Arch Enemy because of how popular they've become, and a lot of people dislike Alissa, but I don't really care about any of that. If the music is good then it's good, and unless someone in the band has done something truly egregious then I'll listen to it. Both of AE's recent tracks sound solid enough to me.

I do wish they'd utilise Alissa's clean vocals more often though. She's a good singer but you rarely hear her use cleans. Her screaming voice is solid as well, but it can get a bit monotonous after a while. Mix it up a bit. It was good to briefly hear some cleans in Liars & Thieves, anyway.
