Ok, call me an old fart, but I just love the vocal style of the early 90's Slayer, Testament, Overkill, Hirax, Forced Entry, & pretty much the whole Bay area style. I just don't hear too many bands doing that anymore. They either do a full on cookie monster impression (in many different octaves, but still the same) or they do squeaky clean pop style vocals. Whatever happened to a good raspy angry vocal that you could understand. Again, don't mean to sound like such an old fart, but why can't bands today have that perfect balance between angry as hell and having some kind of range or tone to their vocal?

What really pisses me off is when the bands go from one extreme to the other. They start out with this full on low end garble one album and then the next album has vocals that remind me more of Def Lepard then any real metal.

When I listen to a lot of the so called 'extreme metal' I love the guitars. The playing is down right amazing, but even if they do try and come close to the late great 90's thrash style on the next album they water down the guitars like crazy. This is why this old fart just can't get into most of the bands out today. I'm curious to hear everyone’s thoughts on this.

Quite simple really. The bands you associate with being an old fart are thrash bands.Cookie monster vocals are death metal and poppy clean vocals is melodic or power metal.
Your favourite style still exists.
Check out The Haunted or Dew Scented.
Or Ritual Carnage for that matter.

Carnal Forge, Dew Scented are quite boring retro thrash. The Haunted have their moments but I find them quite boring also. I suggest you check out bands like Festering Sore, Imagika, Sithlord, Hatework etc.

LOL first time I heard raspy vocals termed, "cookie monster" made me fall out of my chair...really... I have a crappy chair.

yeah nevermore is a great example I think someone already said above. I am just making that more clear. Also, opeth you can understand even when he is not clear vocals. Or maybe I spent to many mornings listening to orchid and morningrise? Sunday Mornings are my OPETH mornings! If I dont come out of my cave till 2pm on sundays then deal with it. hehe.

check out these bands Soilwork(death metal) they use death vocals but aren't so harsh great guitars and also use clean vocals just plain great also Terror 2000(thrash) and Holochaust(thrash and highly influenced by bands like Metallica and other bay area thrash bands)

shadows fall has some vocals as you describe. they go from the shouty singing to growls. its cool. check em out

grave digger has some good vocals too. its power metal buts its not opratic vocals like king diamond.

Thanks everyone, I think I may have failed to explain what I am looking for. With music having so many layers that is not hard to do. Let me try again though. I like my guitars to have the musical depth and heaviness of say Nevermore (P.O.E. to be exact), & vocals that can maintain the perfect balance of vicious attack and clearity of say Slayer (any Lombardo era).

The swedish metal thing is an ok substitute, but the clean/gruff/clean/gruff thing gets old quick. Maybe that is what I liked about the old thrash bands. They were able to keep it feirce through out the entire album with no clean vocals to create that contrast. I think that contrast can be a real cruch sometimes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that all new metal sucks or anything. There are a few gems here and there. The new Soilwork is great, but I wish the guitars had a little more. The newest Grave Digger is pretty good, but a little too fantasy for me to get really into it. We have what I call New-thrash like The Haunted, Terror 2000, or Carnal Forge that are ok, but seem to keep it one pace the entire album. All the songs seem to blur into each other. Black Sabbath proved from the start that speed does not automaticly mean heavy or intense. A harsh (but still understandable) vocal with a slow musical backdrop can somethings be way more intense than any blast beat. Imagine if you will a killer with a sledgehammer. Does he want to hit as fast as he can or as hard as he can? When your fucking don't you want to mix it up with fast and slow? Dew Scented is pretty good and it will be interesting to see how they develop over time. The first two Machine Head & Skinlab albums were great, but we all know where they went.

Bands you all listed that I know nothing about, but am interested...Ritual Carnage, Festering Sore, Imagika, Sithlord, & Hatework. Feel free to give me more info. Any online samples?

I do know about all the recent reunions and was very bummed about missing the Thrash Of THe Titans show last year. Hell, I just hosted the reunion show with Forced Entry and the first show ever in Washinton state with Hirax. Reunions are great, but some young blood is somehow more exciting.

A simple matter of opinion. So you are saying James Labrie is superior to Mikeal Stanne and Mikael Akerfeldt. ROFL
