speaking of SOAD....they were on the radio too, and it was the first thing i had heard of them.....but i must say, after about 10 seconds of the song, i turn the volume all the way down, and rocked out to my handy Iced Earth cd i had with me, so i thank Ripper and the gang for saving me there

I like SOAD. Please don't kick me out of the old school forum! :loco:

Can we just beat the crap out of you? :p

As we had said it many times to each its own, the real beauty about metal and this forum is variety, freedom of choice and the right to disagree (all in due harmony of course). So if you like SOAD, enjoy it ;)

I remember SOAD as being the band that was the opening act on the Ozzfest Second Stage in 1998 or so... I guess they've come a long way since them. Of course this is the same Ozzfest B-stage that has yielded heavy metal gods like Incubus and (now) Jada Pinkett Smith.

Is probably my overexercised imagination, but I detect a bit of irony, cynism and sarcasm :Smug:

BTW, who the fuck is Jada Pinkett Smith?

She's an actress married to rapper/actor Will Smith. Apparently, she has some hard rock band now or something.

The newer stuff on Headbangers Ball is pretty good music wise, but all the singers sound exactly alike. They just scream at the top of thier lungs for the whole song. I like some screaming, as I pretty much grew up on thrash but these bands singers sound horrible for the most part.
Boy howdy, it's gonna have to be some pretty kick ass music (which it's not in my opinion) for me to tolerate those annoying vocals these MTV bands are turning out. I'm not a fan of extreme vocals anyway, and these guys just go way overboard in my opinion (I feel the same way about most death/black metal bands too, so if that's your scene you can go ahead and flip me the bird now).

I've been wanting to breach this subject lately because I just got DirecTV (satellite) and finally have MTV2 and VH1. That means my Saturday nights I have two music shows competing for my attention: Headbangers Ball and Metal Mania.

I tested it for four Saturdays and I've decided not to waste my time on Headbangers Ball anymore. If I'm lucky, I might hear one or two songs the whole 2 hours that I might like, kind of, a little. Meanwhile, Metal Mania usually feeds me cool shit like old Maiden, Saxon, and Fastway videos.

They also have one hour editions of Metal Mania on Mondays at 8pm, and Fridays at 9pm. And they're always different from eachother.

I wouldn't say it's my scene but I am pretty open minded when it comes to rock. I listen from everything from the beatles, doors, savatage, zeppelin, opeth, dream theater, pagans mind, megadeth, slayer, sepultura, motley crue, just about anything. There's really no pattern to my listening except I do probably listen to hard rock/metal 95% of the time. All I'm saying is the last year or two a lot of these newer bands have actually learned to play thier instuments. There are some really cool riffs and solos going on again, and the drumming is pretty good also. The thing that does ruin most of it is the vocals. Like I said I can handle screaming but these guys for the most part just suck ass. I don't listen to alot of death metal for the same reason. I can't stand that grunting through out the whole song. I like the music but the vocals get old real quick. Then again, Into Eternity is one of my favorite new bands. I like the mixture of clean with death vocals. I just think it's getting better and once the singing comes back around we may have a decent scene again.

I record HBB and Metal Mania with my DVR and scan through it. Most of the time I am scanning and not watching in both cases.

I sure hope you're right my Savafriend, and death metal vocals are phasing out. I can handle a few growls here and there, but if it's anything beyond 50/50 I probably won't like it. I can only think of one album I really love that has alot of growling in it: Orphaned Land - Mabool. I deal with growls there and I have actually learned to appreciate them somewhat. But really, my tolerance there is a product of the fantastic MUSIC they create as a backdrop. Balances out the silly growling.

I'm pretty open-minded about music. I just have a few pet peeves: rap, repetition (especially rapid double-bass drumming), and growling/grunting. Outside those boudaries I own everything from Blackmore's Night to Billy Joel to Johnny Cash to Overkill. I am quite finicky though. I'm not a collector so I don't buy albums just to have them. I only buy albums that I am sure will get a lot of mileage in my cd player.

I'm glad my Tastes emcompase pretty much all genre's of metal and their is a few Nu Metal albums that arent bad The First Sevendust was very good and Soil - Scars was good but I fucking hate rap so any band that does that Rap metal thing alot I cant handle Limp Triscut, Stinkin Fart I just dont care for em ... I like some Older Inflames but dont care for em since they turned into inFlamers and Soilwort doesnt do much for me either

stinkin fart! hahaha, that just made me lol.

how can they take our name and kill it so badly?
imagine if they put rap into classical or in salsa and retained the names, the people from that scene would be so pissed!

but, nooo, it just happens to us.

and in case the mallcore thing ends (cause the sales went down)
they introduced the next craptacular crap: emometal,
we got to come up with a term that doesn't have "metal" in it for that one, you know which one's I mean? like shadows fall and chaimara.

mallcore wasn't in the metal section ever, but this new breed of crap is, and those are just tactics for keeping people out of metal that the corporations cannot control, manage and destroy at their will.

What isn't metal about Shadows Fall? Great riffs, excellent drumming, awesome solos. I don't get it. :erk: Just because they are getting some airplay? Please tell me. Also, one of the great things about metal is it brings in influences from almost every genre of music. I don't think any other form of music does this. That's one of the reasons I love it! I will go back to what I said in an earlier post. I like what I like. I don't give a flying fuck what it's called or who likes it. Be it old school thrashers like myself or the fucking kids at Hot Topic. If it sounds good to my ears I will listen.

For the record early Sodom is black metal. Thrash came after. Sodom, Slayer, and Hellhammer are reguarded as the second wave of bands to have the biggest influence upon black metal right behind Venom, Mercyful Fate, and Bathory.

I like what I like too
I liked the first soad album, but I just hate how these bands are used to cover up bands that they can't control, if it wasn't for that, there would be fans for this band, but they would all be real, not just people that think that that is all the metal that there is.

For the record of the record:

Hellhammer 1st demo 1983, 1st EP 1984
Slayer 1st demo 1983, 1st LP 1984
Mercyful Fate 1st demo 1981, 1st EP 1982
Sodom 1st demo 1983, 1st EP 1984
Bathory 1st album 1984
Venom 1st demo 1980, 1st LP 1981

I'll say that after Venom the rest were basically altogether forerunners of the black metal movement, even if they all played thrash basically.

Also is important to mention here:

Bulldozer 1st demo 1984, 1st LP 1985
Possessed 1st demo 1984, 1st LP 1985
