That's awesome Zach! Completely unrelated is what is going on just across the street from where I work. Needless to say, this area is a shithole, and there have already been cars broken into in broad daylight, amongst every kind of vandalism possible. I made it known that for $1 USD more per hour, I'll sit up on the roof and start picking these little bastards (& big bastards too) with a 30-06...

In a way, I DO feel bad for the decent people who live there, but in an article posted on Friday, 75% of the people who live there think it's a great idea....

They recently did that with a neighborhood here in D.C. (i'll link an article later). The area has always been troublesome and a few weekends ago, there were something like 8 murders all within a few blocks of each other (all within a span of about 6 hours. A couple weekends ago, they setup police checkpoints going in and out of the place. Of course there were people bitching but as far as the people who actually live in the neighborhood go, the overwhelming majority of them have welcomed it. Ideally, the whole thing wouldn't have to be an issue, but given the choice of having gangs rule the streets or having police regulate them, I choose police.

If you would ever move to Sweden (or visit!), I recommend the west coast (closest to Norway). After living in and around Stockholm for 20 years I recently moved to Gothenburg to study (Göteborg - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothenburg ) and so far it's ten times better. Although it could be because I live 248 miles away from my parents now :D Also, Gothenburg is a very touristy city, you can easily get around speaking English (and the people here are very social- a silent Gothenburger is a dead one :P seriously these people never shut the fuck up). You could probably get around with English anywhere in Sweden, though.

I've only been here for a month and I'm still taking walks now and then just learning the streets and stuff so maybe I shouldn't praise the place too much. Maybe in another month the people here will drop the charade and eat my flesh. Who knows eh.

The best thing with my new place is that I have a Systembolaget ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Systembolaget ) like a hundred meters away from my door :D

It's probably easier than mandarin or russian :D I mean it's the same alphabet as the English language but with the addition of å,ä and ö (a, b, c [...] x, y, z, å, ä, ö) and basically all words can be bluntly translated and still make some sense. But we have some really fucked up grammar rules that I think most swedes don't even know. For example de/dem (something like they/them) most swedes just use "dom" in either case ("theym?" :P). Of course there are some pronunciations that are weird for Americans but most can be found in the American language aswell.

examples:
Ö - the "u" in "duh"
Å - the "o" in "sword"
Ä - the "ea" in "yeah"

Wow, that sucks.

Sucks both ways. I hate to have to deal with an interrogation everytime I leave my home BUT there has been a lot of crime inside the complex, as well as over by our office buildings. Something else that may not have been mentioned in that link is that the town wants to raze this huge complex, and build more office buildings and a strip mall or 2. The owner of the buildings/land has been holding out for more $'s, and some see this as a political move. If I had $1 USD for every police car I see at night going in or out of that area in the last year, I'd be retired....

People have a distorted view of civil rights in many instances.

Agree 100%. I believe the judge that hears this case will probably tell them to go sit & spin... I used to think this was a "decent" suburb. It always was when I was younger, but I've heard a lot about Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, & Rolling Meadows being kinda shitty now with gang issues. It's stuff like this that makes me happy to live in my little cross border blue collar redneck town.....

This sounds like a mirror image of what's happened here, minus the crime being murders. :ill: I agree with you all the way, I'd much rather have cops than gangbangers running around.

Is it easy to learn Swedish? I'm working on it...

It's quite easy to learn the basics of written Swedish, it's very similar to English. The Swedish pronounciation is harder, that's why we Finns have invented this horribly sucky sounding Finnish-Swedish -accent. lål!

Russian is tough...but some of the language is eerily like Spanish...especially how they roll the R's...even some of the words are just about the same.

And even closer to Polish...correct? My mom was fluent in Polish, and when my sister married a Ukrainian guy, the moms seemed to be able to talk about the rest of us without us knowing!

Hey, Ken and Charis!

The graphic novel of "The Hedge Knight II - The Sworn Sword" is out. I'm getting it today. I'm gonna have to venture into a comic store, which is scary, but the Borders here doesn't have it in stock because it's not some stupid movie bullshit. But, oh man, I'm pretty sure we get to find out what happened at Summerhall, so it's worth it!

Well, it's right by Mundelein, which has been going downhill for quite a while...
Round Lake, & Round Lake Beach are actually much worse....

Many of the Chicago suburbs are taking a turn for the worse. The slumping housing market isn't helping much. I was reading how many middle-class neighborhoods are seeing record numbers of foreclosures(not surprising.) As a result there are record numbers of abandoned/unmaintained homes lending themselves to drug/gang/etc. activity. Equally as problematic is that many of the banks foreclosing are choosing to rent these homes out at bargain basement prices for the time being. So then you just get an influx of renters who have no vested interest in maintaining the safety/comfort of the neighborhood.
