p.s. ken.. ive just finished book 2 of the sword of truth, and don't hate me but i'm growing to like it! it's not martin, nothing is, but it's still good in its own right.. the first book was cheesy and alot of the dialogue was terrible, but it was entertaining. though i agree with you i thought richard cypher was a fucking tool, but by the 2nd book he has started growing alot, and the storyline has started expanding alot also. the main bad point is goodkind doesn't seem to have the capacity for character depth like martin does, but he has focused on the magic side of things alot, so its not too bad. i also don't think the first book was meant to be stand alone.. maybe it's written somewhere that it is, but it just seemed like an introduction to me, so i don't think so personally. anyway just thought id share coz i havent talked to you on msn in a while.

Oh man... I read the whole series, and I was waiting for it to get good.

I can sum it up for you. Richard does everything right, convinces everyone to side with him all the time, and says something noble after doing it. Repeat 30 times or so, and there's the series. Oh, and he gets all the sweetest powers ever and is stronger and smarter than everyone else.

Yeah...I heard about that. i wanted to watch it, but I got stuck de-spidering my bathroom. I think I read that they just did Tom Sawyer though...which I wont lose sleep over for missing. I really want to go see them (again) this Saturday but I don't know if I can swing the ticket cost...

haha jeff, well yeah that's pretty much how it goes.. that's what i mean by goodkind sucks at character depth, but it's still read-worthy.. well the first 2 books were.. although i think its shit how he does a fairly good battle scene with kahlan and the imperial order, but then he totally skips out on the final scenes like the beheading and the sending darken rahl back to the underworld again and sealing the box of orden, which is supposed to be the climax of the story, and it just covers the last 2 chapters in a hurry.. that's pretty fucked.

i just can't find any other writers besides GRRM who are flawless in all that stuff.. I've tried asking Ken but he is such a Gene Wolfe fanboi he is useless at recommending anything else :P Although I'm still curious about Mieville..

The sword of truth series really falls apart after faith of the fallen. I still enjoyed it though.

Sci fi/Fantasy = Frank Herbert. The Dune series is a must read.

Yeah, the guy can write a good battle scene. I'll give him that.

The other thing you mentioned is what I think seperates okay writers from great writers - balancing out the setup, the body, and the climax of a story. Goodkind has some good stories, but the proportions are all off. I always found myself getting deep into a story, and I'm like "Okay, we're still piling on problems with no solution in sight, and there are only 30 pages left!" Then there's a 10-page climax and a 10-page "what happened after" that leaves me a little dissatisfied.

Also, Goodkind fantasizes about chicks in leather that whip him and magically inflict pain.

Edit: You might like Dune. It's not really so sci-fi to the point where they spend pages talking about the specs on their guns or spaceships. It's a cool story... I didn't go wild over it like a lot of people do, but I did enjoy it.

Yeah, there are 6 "original" Dune books from Herbet snr (with him dying at the end of the 6th)

I honestly think Charis given the books you do like, that you'll like Dune. It's sci fi in the same way the book of the new sun is sci fi.
