Yeah...I heard about that. i wanted to watch it, but I got stuck de-spidering my bathroom. I think I read that they just did Tom Sawyer though...which I wont lose sleep over for missing. I really want to go see them (again) this Saturday but I don't know if I can swing the ticket cost...

It's on colbertnation.com

Yeah, there are 6 "original" Dune books from Herbet snr (with him dying at the end of the 6th)

I honestly think Charis given the books you do like, that you'll like Dune. It's sci fi in the same way the book of the new sun is sci fi.

Except Frank Herbert doesn't hide his convictions beneath layers of enigma like Wolfe. He's fairly straightfoward and his characters are more likeable/hateable, less transient and dynamic. (Muad'ib excluded)

cept i didnt really like book of the new sun at all.. like ive said to ken, part 3 was the only part that i really got into. maybe one day i'll pick up dune..

at jeff.. yeah i find the same problems with goodkind, there's too much build up to the climax and then when it happens its a real let down lol..he is another author that just likes to waffle on too much. they spend so much time worrying about the impending doom, and when it arrives it's no big deal..

He's the Prince Of Nothing guy? I thought it was alright. IMO, he wishes he was doing what Wolfe does. Baxter's "philosophy" is a bit shallow by comparison and contrived for the plot.

Stephen R. Donaldson and the Thomas Covenant series are my faves. I saw at the bookstore last week that he has a new trilogy started for Covenant. I may need to get back into "reading for fun". Plus, Donaldson's from New Mexico. Woo hoo!

I went to see Iron Maiden yesterday in Helsinki. The gig was awesome, not just because of the band but due to 50k people who were jumping and shouting with every song. One funny coincidence was to see a seagull fly over the stadium during the speech for Rime Of The Ancient Marine (Dickinson saw this too and made a funny remark about it.) It wasn't just a gig, it was a full featured show worth every cent. (Well, actually I got my ticket free but anyway. :D)

For must-read-scifi I suggest Hyperion & The Fall of Hyperion by Dan Simmons. And Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card.

I'm reading Hyperion now and I can honestly say, even only 1/3 into it, that it's one of the best sci fi books I have ever read. The part where the priest encountered the Shrike and how he died was awesome.

I think Prince of Nothing is by someone called Bakker perhaps? I could be wrong...

Stephen Baxter is along the lines of Arthur C Clarke, and has co-written some stuff with him. I'm just enjoying being back into sci-fi for its own sake at the moment. I'm always on the lookout for new stuff though, so if you can recommend any authors I ought to get into that would be cool! :)

Did you read the Time Odyssey novels by chance? I heard they where sort of a retelling of the original Space Odyssey series. I'm kind of weary of reading books only co written by A C Clark. Anyone who loved Rendezvous With Rama and then read Rama II will know exactly what I'm talking about.:ill:

Yeah, Stephen Baxter has done a few time-shift-based books.

Hey... I loved the Rama books...

But then.... I'm on the way back from a long time off sci-fi so I haven't reached the bored stage yet..... :p

Anyhoo... the Clarke dude popped his clogs a while back so he won't be co-writing anything any more....

I got about halfway into Rama II and lost interest. I definitely didn't think it was a page turner like the first one was. If you think they are good/get better I'll read them. I have all 4 on my shelf.

So I've been tossing around the idea of hosting a 90's party. Speaks for itself really, consisting of all 90's music good/bad/funny/one-hit wonder etc... Clothing will be mandated by 90's fashions and whatnot, as will all foods/served beverages, blah blah blah. Being that I'm a child of the 90's i'm not interested in your gaylord 60's/70's acid flashbacks nor your 80's coke/Zack Morris cell phone inspired shit stain ideas. Only suggestions pertaining to the 1990's are needed. Thanks.
