Good call on AIC. Funny thing is that a lot of those guys were so influenced by the metal scene early on... you can tell by the first few records of all those bands. maybe the attitude changed and the song content changed, but much of the musicianship and actual songs are very much metal. I think it's funny that it got tagged "grunge" when it was just a bunch of anti-scene people who just wanted to rock while not wanting to be rockstars.

Pearl Jam, AIC, Soundgarden... all had solid first album (or first few... or in the case of AIC, all their stuff). Grunge is a bullshit term.

and fuck nirvana

Yeah, I hear that. Do you think it was Layne Staley's vocals that got AIC throw in the grunge category to start with?.. he had that back-of-the-throat sound going on that was said to be 'grunge' rather than 'metal'.

As for Soundgarden, Cornell's vocals were more metal than grunge... was that categorisation a Seattle thing?

Not that I'm a fan of categorising things anyway... it sucks in a way:erk:

AIC, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden all got lumped in because they came from this "new thing" coming out of seattle. I don't think any of them sound even remotely like Nirvana, who also weren't really doing anything new (Kurt Cobain had been known to say that they were basically an unapologetic Pixies rip-off). That's just me, doesn't mean that's the way it is, but the general consensus around the seattle-area is that it was just a time and place sort of thing. There's really no validity to the "grunge movement" here.

Track listing for Death Magnetic:

That Was Just Your Life
The End Of The Line
Broken, Beat & Scarred
The Day That Never Comes
All Nightmare Long
Cyanide
The Unforgiven III
The Judas Kiss
Suicide & Redemption
My Apocalypse

Despite the fact that both Unforgiven and Unforgiven II were both killer songs IMO, "unforgiven III" as a song title is still a bit of a groaner for me. Hopefully the trend sticks and the third installment kicks ass too.

dude, i think the album is going to suck if they have to go with Unforgiven III. What...the....fuck.

Best comment on blabbermouth about that was the one wiht the fake lyrics.
"Turn the shotgun on me... because your Unforgiven III!!!!"

Metallica used to be one of the most respected metal bands on the planet, now they're pretty much just laughed at by everyone. They should have called it quits after S&M. After watching 'Some kind of monster' I kind of lost respect for them. What a bunch of little emo kids.

By the way, I loved the first two unforgiven songs. I'll wait to buy it a few days after it's released so I can get a used copy.

Respected by whom? In my opinion, they've always been a fanboi band, even in the '80's. The '80's kids were just a different kind of fanboi. Metallica died when Cliff Burton died.

Granted, I'm not an expert on the band or the genre by any means, but it seems like they lost a lot credibility in the metal community after St. Anger. They may have not even had any. Though one thing is for sure - even their fanboi's abandoned them after that album.

I just found out that the support band for Opeth in November is Cynic... Excuse me while I go scream with joy.
