One-sentence advice/knowledge thread

1. Don't eat yellow snow!

2. You gotta start somewhere.

3. Only way to get better is to keep doing, doing it and doing it and doing it.

Here a couple from David Pensado:
"It's about what you do with the gear, not about the gear itself,"

"It's better to sound new than to sound good,"
"Old guys spending their time
trying to sound good have become irrelevant,"
"We only ever see them at the Grammys when they receive
bullshit awards for things that don't matter any more."

Use drum sounds that are unique to your productions.

Seriously- learn how to actually create drum samples you like, don't cop out.

It is imperative that you learn to tune drums- learn what produces sounds you like, and don't like.

Speak your mind with clients, but be kind.

This comment doesnt belong I think because it is a matter of personal taste
rather than a general truth.

There is no ampsim out there, not even ReValver, that has the same mojo and feel then a good mic'ed amp. I've been playing guitar for over 10y now and I've seen the rise of amp sims and they don't sound the same yet.

Ampsims for pre-production: yes
Ampsims for final: hell no. Rent a good amp or send your di's to someone for re-amping

Producers making the sick-ass records of 20 years ago would have killed for the shit you have already. Dont go crazy for gear. Learn to use it better.

I agree but I didn't want this thread to degenerate into a flame war !!

After watching the video Anssi posted I thought of one more :

- Musicians should be heard but not seen.

Don't mix on headphones.

Totally disagree. Unless you have a top-dollar expensive, pro designed room then a good pair of pro mixing headphones are essential supplements to a good moniter system.

Take a break or get some sleep. Sometimes it sounds better the next day.

Or the next week. Or even the next year.
Gotta let your music 'sit in' or 'age' before you can decide objectively just how good (or bad) your OWN stuff really is.
