One-sentence advice/knowledge thread

always record scratch tracks for the drummer. They can get more into the whole feel of the song that way and you will get a performance with more "soul"

Never try to match XYZ's guitar tone without stacking your guitar first as well... No metal album has only one track of guitar unless its stoner metal...

STACK THE VOCALS... And try to add some life to them with a filtered delay and a little reverb so its not just the same thing over and over on every damn song... Learn to set the delay with the beat and use it in stereo so you can have it different for each side...

- You need less gain/distortion on guitars than you think.
- You need less low end on guitars than you think.
- Avoid extreme use of EQ.
- Leave some of those imperfections - it makes the performance more interesting and human.
- High pass reverb so it doesn't muddy up the song.
- Make sure the instruments are properly intonated.
- Tune often.

some good ones worth repeating:
- Take a break often when mixing.
- Get the sound right at the source.
- Tweak the tracks for YOUR mix, not trying to match someone else's.

For the lonely one man band:

1.) Always make sure you have a full case of beer in the fridge BEFORE recording.
2.) Don't get into the "happy stuff" until you can't get a good take because of item #1
3.) Take Porn (or nookie if available) breaks at least twice during a 3 hour session.....
*****Note....May need to jump back to item #2 if Item #1 is really apparent
4.) Wash your fuckin' hands.....thats sick!
5.) Listen the next day.....still sound good = Keep!
