Opeth Board - Did I Miss Something?

This disc is wierd. Not in a bad way. But Opeth have definitely gone in a different direction. They've mellowed, but not in a "we want to sell more CDs" kind of way. Their signature sound is still there and Mikael still has the best Death vox in Metal, but they've added elements to their sound in a way they never have previously. Mikael's clean vocals have also continued to improve. Keyboards are very much a factor, in a very 70s Prog sort of way, but without the Wilson vibe. I need some time to absorb all of it. But I suspect this disc may wind up as one of my favorite Opeth CDs.

the first half of the album is really great, unfortunately I think it loses its momentum in the second half. The last 2 heavy tracks seem somewhat bland compared to the rest of the album (tracks 5 and 7), and 7 (grand conjuration) really does nothing for me at all. The clean vox really do shine on this one though, mikael has come a long way. Barring those aforementioned moments, there is a lot of quality music on there.

and interesting how it kicks into a definite "dredg" style in track 3, briefly!

Sold. I was probably going to buy it anyway though.

Novembers Doom has no apostrophe.

This thread is fucking awesome.

Also the "can of worms" thing was referring to a review posted on The End forum when Pale Haunt Departure was released. The tool used the word "Opeth" like 30 times in a 500 word review, and it pissed off at least one member of the band. It was fucking awful.

Well, I'm assuming that was what Erik was referring to anyhow. :dopey:

From what I've heard so far (tracks 1 through 4), they have definitely gone in a different direction, but with renewed focus and without, as you say, a "we want to sell more CD's / Roadrunner asked us to do this" kind of way.

My initial impression is that the keyboards sound brilliant in some parts, and just kind of there in others. A very interesting addition to their sound. Akerfeldt's vocals are as top notch as ever with a new, mellower (I almost want to say relaxed) pitch in many of his clean vocal parts. As a whole, it is indeed a much mellower release so far than what I was expecting, which was disappointing at first - but I am pleasantly surprised at the results I've heard. Consider my attention span at full throttle for this one as opposed to Blackwater Park and Deliverance, where everything was at a more by the numbers (albeit thoroughly enjoyable) pace.

As far as the actual songs go, tracks 2 and 3 are simply incredible upon first listen, while track 1 was a bit of a labor to get through (though it has a very good opening part and a fantastic ending). Track 4 has a lot of variation and needs more spins to get a better read on it.

Makes sense. ND definitely have their own style, and I'm certain now that the blurb about Opeth was in a complimentary, rather than "they've been influential" way.

Again, where's the black metal that everyone, including the band, were talking about? This is the same shit.

For the 981264th time, I like Opeth's first two, and always will. THey aren't among my favorites, but I enjoy a listen now and again. But I can't listen to the others, just too damn boring and without innovation. I still don't know what to think of this Roadrunner fiasco.

However, I will agree with IotS in that Opeth are not the original band everyone thinks they are. Unfortunately, they are one of today's more popular newbie bands, as evidenced by the lovely forum here on UM.

Dark One, it's kinda lame to make fun of someone from Greece doing his best to write in English. Can you write in Greek? Thought not.

As for the new Opeth. Fuck it. New Pelican is far more important.

someone trade me some Bal-Sagoth for my My Arms, Your Hearse and Still Life. Cheese they may be, but at least Bal Sagoth is entertaining.

I agree. I wasn't expecting something black metal-ish, but I was expecting something far heavier.

I disagree thoroughly (see above).

I never wanted to convey that they are this "incredibly original" band. But they do have their own sound and their first two albums, at least as far as I'm concerned, were very "original", particularly Morningrise. Anyway, thanks at least for acknowledging their popularity and place among today's bands, though I don't understand why you would consider it "unfortunate".

His best???? Hardly. And I think it's kind of lame to be the first one to write in such a clearly venomous and harsh manner. He even admitted to not minding being considered an asshole. Sorry, just because you happen to, for the most part, agree with his opinions on Opeth, that's no reason to ignore the venomous phrasing of his delivery and attack my reactions to it instead.

Your opinion and you're more than entitled to it.

I haven't heard anything from it. I'm still waiting for people to pay me on eBay so I can get it.

March into the Sea (the song) didn't impress as much as the songs on Australasia, but it was still good.

Well, I mean, it is still a really good release, it just isn't as heavy as their previous output. They take on more of a "post-rock" structure to their songs, if that makes any sense. If I wanted that, I will listen to Mono, GY!BE, Evpatoria Report, and the like.

my exact thoughts on the album, and why I can't get into it.

(well not exact thoughts, since I haven't heard evpatoria.. but.. close enough, the whole "CRUSHING HEAVINESS of pelican of old, vs the post-rockness of the new one" thing)

So what you dudes are saying is that even if I wasn't blown away by March Into the Sea, I should still pick up Australasia?
