Im not getting anything from Opeth anymore, nothing new is coming from them, seems they are repeating themselves now and nothing shocking or exciting comes from them anymore, just one step down with each release.... your thoughts??

If they were to break up, I wouldn't be upset. I think they have already made their best stuff in my opinion.

Back to the main thread, I disagree with you. Saying that since Deliverance Opeth has bored you actually means that you don't enjoy Ghost Reveries. Damnation was made at the same time as Deliverance, and cannot be judged as a progression from that time. Personally, Ghost Reveries is my favourite album, followed closely by Morningrise. It's all about taste.

EDIT: Well, now most of the things that WERE said in this thread have been deleted I look like quite the fool. La de da.

I think Ghost Reveries was a clear progression from Deliverance. In all honesty, I'm at a stage where I would totally understand if the band were to break up. They have done quite a lot musically over the last decade and a half, and it would be fair for them to go their seperate ways.

I think as long as Mike is writing music, the essence of the band 'Opeth' will still be alive and well.

Opeth is not metal anymore, on Ghost Reveries the growls sounded forced and were very rare.

They keep the growls because it is their metal street cred but they are not into it anymore.
Proof is that Mikael doesn't listen to metal anymore and he said no metal band has struck him recently.

You make it sound as if being metal is a pre-requisite of being a good band.

there may be a lot of truth and validity to what youre saying...but i have nothing to lose to hear one more album out of them to see what happens. but i have my reservations. i just want opeth to stop the "opeth" sound...and do something different and unpredictable.

I agree with that a little, but I think that GR had quite a few atypical Opeth moments. I reckon the next album is going to be a nice surprise.

They've had their ups and downs, but Ghost Reveries is clearly a step up from Deliverance + Damnation. Damnation was beautiful, but I think Ghost Reveries takes the cake. I agree with Moonlapse in that Opeth will always live in Mikael Akerfeldt no matter what happens to the band. Saying that the growls were forced on GR is a dumb comment. The Baying of the Hounds is brilliant in that department!

To be completely honest, I hope Mike decides to make a more psychidelic prog rock album. Fuck anyone who wants this or that, let him do what he wants! He loves that type of music and I would love him to play some more! Either way I will probably buy anything he is involved with. We will see how this SW/Portnoy/Mike thing goes, and then judge where Opeth will go.

*cough ^ yep cough*

he tried to make a "psychadelic" album with damnation. it crashed and burned into average predictable opeth ballads...lets let him stick to what hes good at. or maybe he just needed to get his feet wet. either way...i hope the next thing knocks my socks off.

Yeah, I agree with every post here. No album of theirs since Still Life has been essential but that doesn't mean they should quit. They're still putting out quality stuff and the metal world needs them. I also think that joining a new label (especially since it's Roadrunner) meant that they had to make a typical Opeth album. Next time I hope they will experiment and go with what they really want to do. Of course, this doesn't mean it will be a success - the growls on Reveries do sound like they don't belong there but its still a good album, and while Damnation arguably burned it was still a passionate record. So no matter if they decide to play it safe or to shock, it's no guarantee of glory.

I want Mikael to come in some day and lambast all you faithless pessimists. Opeth still has the potential to put out great music.

Lets see where do I start?

Well first of all I think you will find that the majority of people consider Blackwater Park to be Opeths "essential" album, not Still Life.
2nd, Opeth already had ghost reveries pretty much sorted before even joining roadrunner so the fact that they went with roadrunner had no bearing what so ever on the record.
3rd, Growls on ghost reveries forced? Are you completely retarded or do you skip Baying of the hounds everytime you listen to the album?
lastly, how did Damnation do badly?
Most fans of the band already, loved the album and it also opened up the door for a whole lot of new fans who would eventually come to love even the growls so therefore I reckon damnation did wonders for the band....

Basically 90% of your post was complete dribble... Sorry
