Opeth using open tuning?

I read in a couple of interviews Mike was considering using Open tunings, how do you think this will affect the sound, better or worse?

more diversity is a good thing imo. open tuning give new possibilities to express yourself, so i dont see any problem with it. i am quite sure that mike will manage it to come off with some great ideas...

@carrot: agreed. though i don't know much about the tuning or tunings themselves...but i only see it as being better.

I think its just tuning it to the notes of an open chord, like d or a g or something. could start something new maybe, i dont think there are many metal bands that do it.

man, it depends what open tuning they tune to, if its an evil sounding chord/tuning then its goin to sound far from numetal, if they do infact use an open tuning its going to be a wise choice and no doubt going to sound evil.

open tunings will make it harder for me to play their songs
(my guitar has a floyd rose)

but musically it could be cool

(my guitar has a floyd rose) << that's why i wouldnt buy a floyd rose guitar has long as i didnt own any other guitars that i could tune differently

i normally don't have to take it out of standard. for that purpose, and that it stays in tune, and that the whammy is cool, i like it a lot. changing tunings is a pain and i tend to just re-transcribe to fit my current tuning.

you could just "block" your floyd rose (that is if you don't mind never using the whammy bar again)

i could but then i'd have an unsightly block on my guitar. besides the inability to change tunings easily, the setup is flawless.

It isn't going to really change anything, it's not like if they drop to D on a song they're all of a sudden going to just play one finger power chords throughout.
