OT: GAS PRICES WHERE U ARE

It's about $2.85 a gallon here.
TSO is right. The country is huge so mass transit is not feasible, especially in the low density population areas of the West. Denver has a great mass transit system and continues to add to it since it cannot keep up with the demand. But that's in a fairly high density population center.
A decade to free ourselves of foreign oil? Why? Brazil is almost completely converted to ethanol. Last I checked, they hadn't put a man (or woman) on the moon yet. My nephew-in-law's father is currently producing 20 gallons of ethanol a day for his own use. I honestly believe that if the government pushed just a little that we could do it in half that time. Cleaner air and a renewable source of energy in five years. What's not to like about that. We could also get rid of the farm subsidies soon afterwards. They're obviously not motivated enough. I'd like to find a politician that isn't in the back pocket of the oil companies. I don't think one exists.
Oh, and I ditched the big car a few years ago and got a little Toyota hooptiemobile. 30 mpg.

Shit, I remember back 11 years ago when we were paying 95 cents a gallon for regular. It's getting to the point that I can barely use my car to even get to work. I feel incredibly unsympathetic for the guys I work with who are driving light trucks and SUVs because they're basically fucking themselves in the ass driving vehicles they can't afford.
I remember sitting in elementary school about 25 years ago watching some movie aimed at students about the oil industry. They had predicted that oil would be in short supply, if not completely gone, by the year 2001, so it's past time we were utilizing alternative fuels.
I hate to break conspiracy theories here but speaking as a stock holder in a few major oil companies I have not seen any major boost to my portfolio. All this talk of record profits are falling within normal parameters of a buisness doing well. It is nothing like the late 90's with internet boom where I was making money hand over fist. Hawk hit the nail on the head with his comment about India and China. These two countries' economies have been growing by leaps and bounds. It's just supply and demand forces at work.
I suggest to start investing in ethanol. If that goes the way I hope it will, being on the ground floor of that investment could really help to make some serious bank.

Here in the NYC area, 87 octane is generally $3.25/gallon. Luckily, I take mass transit to work and generally only use a car on weekends.
Things may get better in the short-term, in terms of price/gallon, but in the long-term, the situation will decay exponentially. The fact of the matter is that the demand for Middle Eastern oil will continue to grow by leaps and bounds as the economies of China and India continue their rapid growth.
And if you read up on "Hubbert's Peak", you'll really wet your pants. Considering the fact that Hubbert predicted the America's peak in the early 70s, the theory stands.
The one potential bright-spot (although short-term) can actually be found in Iraq. Due to sabotage, the oil-producing infrastructure there remains severely hampered. However, my hope is that the current American Republican party is voted out of office in 2008 (which is very unlikely, IMO) and that the Democratic party picks up on the plan 2004 candidate John Kerry spoke of which is soliciting the help of the EU nations. The fact of the matter is that the US military is stretched too thin to contain the insurgency and "win" Iraq. Without serious help, it may never happen.
Of course, such a plan would translate into America being forced to "share the pie" (spoils of war = investment, etc).....which is something the current admin is loathe to do.

- prices are regulated by the Government too, so there's no competition

$2.79 here in Sweet Home Alabama. We have it lucky compared to many though. I should ask Urban (Breed) how much he pays for gas. I know Sweden, Denmark and Finland pay a pretty high amount per litre.

Here in the San Francisco Bay area we are paying anywhere from $3.35 to $3.45 for the lowest grade. Reading the national average is always a drag because we are ALWAYS much higher. Not sure why, but they explain it in the newspaper every couple of months (and I either ignore it or forget as soon as I read it).

I guess I should have added this to my post, but WTF, I'll just throw it here.
When I refi'ed my house, I paid off the last of my truck payments, figuring the savings on that would pay off in the long term. Then gas nearly doubled. Since I'm STILL recovering financially from "rock bottom" replacing my vehicle is out of the question. I can NOT afford car payments, and I won't empty my small nest egg due to concern about my jobs future. We lost a huge airline client this week, and it's killing the company I work for. Last time I was out of work, I was out a year and a half. I have enough to keep me afloat for about 6 months. So for all the Euros and others who say "ditch your gas guzzler", It's not quite THAT easy, but go ahead and bash away, you'll probably enjoy it.

It astounds me (not actually) that the FTC and our government says that there is no gouging and it is all fair market value. Then the age old question remains....what is fair?
