overlooked essentials

Yeah, I highly recommend Sorhin. Some other good/decent stuff:

The Darksend - Unsunned
Algaion - Oimai Algeiou
Niden Div. 187 - Impergium
Midvinter - At the Sight of the Apocalypse Dragon
Octinomos - On the Demiurge
Swordmaster - Wraths of Time

Mork Gryning's first album isn't too bad either.

Also, if you end up checking out The Abyss (Hypocrisy playing Black Metal), only bother with the debut.

Is The Black overlooked, or do I just have shit taste? Excellent second wave Swedish Black Metal featuring Jon Nodtveidt. Surely people must know this band, so what is it? Does everyone else think they suck?
Black Metal's not really my thing. I'm more of a progressive metal and melo-death kind of guy.

as for Overlooked albums.. umm

Adagio's first two, Sanctus Ignis and Underworld.
and Anubis Gate, Andromeda Unchained. I just got that one and it's great. Fans of Beyond Twilight and Pyramaze might like them

In Flames - Subterranean - Overlooked experimental EP
Swashbuckle - Crewed By The Damned (greatest pirate metal album ever)
Eluveitie - Spirit - amazing pagan metal

I could also add:

Sacramentum - Far Away from the Sun
Nifelheim - Nifelheim
Nefandus - The Nightwinds Carried Our Names
Vinterland - Welcome My Last Chapter
Dawn - Slaughtersun
Diabolical Masquerade - Ravendusk in my Heart
Ofermod - Mystérion Tes Anominas
Malign - Divine Facing
Ophthalamia - Via Dolorosa
Armagedda - Ond Spiritism Djæfvulens Skalder (not old but great)

I wholly agree with Unanimated. Both albums are massively overlooked (the first by OSDM fans, the second by melo-death kids).

And yeah, the Dream Death and Messiah albums mentioned fucking rule.

A few others that I've just thought of:

Decayed - The Conjuration of the Southern Circle (I don't think I've ever seen this talked about before, here or anywhere else. Awesome second-wave BM from Portugal)

Maniac Butcher - Barbarians (Even when people speak of the mighty Czech scene, Maniac Butcher is strangely often forgotten! Maybe it's due to the ridiculous band photos (you thought Immortal was bad?) or the silly name, but their early albums are classic, vicious Black Metal with utterly scathing vocals. Essential!)

Bloodstone (Swe) - Hour of the Gate (Obscure and rare-as-all-fuck Swedish Death Metal that captures everything great about the old Swedish scene. Easily among the top ten Swedish Death Metal albums of all time.)

Hmm... in my opinion anyway

Garden of Shadows - Oracle Moon
Mourning Beloveth - The Sullen Sulcus
Jacobs Dream - Jacobs Dream
Vesperian Sorrow - Psychotic Sculpture

Blood Harvest Records will be re-releasing that album, and hopefully soon.

I'd search M-A on Dream Death, but I'm on a shitty wireless connection atm. Anyone care to provide a brief description / similar bands + album to start with?

Will also have to check out Bloodstone.

I'm surprised MP hasn't mentioned Dark Tribe - they appear to be somewhat overlooked. I still can't get my head around what is going on, on In Jeraspunta, nor can I understand why I even like it - the album is nothing short of insane.

Considering Journey into Mystery is sadly their only album I'd start with that. The band is mostly a mix of thrash and doom metal, but could be easily be seen as in early representation of Doom/Death. The vocals are very a like Tom Araya, and the guitars shift from doom to thrash occasionally. If Sempiternal Deathreign and Slayer were to have a child this would be it.
