overlooked essentials

Yeah, Electrocution's Inside the Unreal is good stuff.

I'd also like to second Abysmal's The Pillorian Age and throw these two out there:

Obtained Enslavement - Witchcraft
Obtained Enslavement - Soulblight

Masterful and essential (non-gay)Symphonic Black Metal.

Intestine Baalism - Banquet In The Darkness
Orphaned Land - Mabool
Abgott - Artefacts of Madness
Divinefire - Into a New Dimension
Aborym - Fire Walk With Us
Daylight Dies - Dismantling Devotion
Indesinence - Noctambulism
Shadow Gallery - Room V
The Angelic Process - Weighing Souls With Sand

I have only heard Abgott's Fizala. It is pretty crappy and I am selling/trading it to people who think they'd like some bizarre technical BM.

However, that Intestine Baalism album surely is essential.

Fizala is misformed at best... I think they're really onto something with Artefacts of Madness it isn't just tech black metal for the gimmick of it this time around, they actually manage to make sweeps atmospheric and fairly heavy as well... i'd almost actually place it in the same vein as Emperor - IX Equilibrium

Adagio - Sanctus Ignis, Underworld
Anubis Gate - Andromeda Unchained
Beyond Twilight - For the Love of Art and the Making

Edited  Forgot they were supposed to be overlooked. Lost my head when I made the post

Symphony X - The Divine Wings of Tragedy, Paradise Lost
Opeth - Still Life, Blackwater Park, Damnation, Deliverance
Pyramaze - Melancholy Beast, Legend of the Bone Carver
Nevermore - The Politics of Ecstasy, This Godless Endeavor

Adagio and Beyond Twilight i'd agree with but all the rest of them are far from overlooked

I think Vesania gets overlooked quite a bit, i thought their cd God of Xul was a masterpiece, but i never hear anything mentioned about them.

You come and go from this place.

How is Shadow Gallery?

Goddamn, these are fucking good.

OE's first album, Centuries of Sorrow also deserves mention; not keyboard-filled like the other works you mentioned, but it works out to be a very solid rawer BM release with well-executed melancholic melodies/atmosphere.

that I do... i was semi active here for a while but then the forums kind of stagnated and I left.... I lurk intermittently now, and VVVVV will tell me to chime in from time to time... it all depends how much you like Prog Rock/Metal for Shadow Gallery I'd say they're at the very least a modern Savatage and should be seen in the upper tier with Dream Theater and Symphony X... its quite moving stuff not just in terms of melody(both metal wise and in a more mainstream sense) and technical skill... but they've come up with some of the more intriguing concept album material in a while

Is The Black overlooked, or do I just have shit taste? Excellent second wave Swedish Black Metal featuring Jon Nodtveidt. Surely people must know this band, so what is it? Does everyone else think they suck?

The Priest of Satan rules.

Fran Marder by Arckanum (and everything else...) also goes largely unnoticed, much like the vast majority of early Swedish Black Metal (Throne of Ahaz, Thornium, Nefandus, Nåstrond, Ophthalamia, Vargavinter, The Abyss, The Moaning, et cetera).
