Pantera!

I never liked Slayer, I don't even think they're that good. In fact I think it's embarassing that Kerry King has been playing guitar for more than 20 years and he still hasn't learned how to play a decent solo.
haha that cracked me up:lol:

Pantera all the way. I only listen to one full album. Reign in Blood by the way. Some other hits are alright, but that's about it for Slayer. Vulgar, CFH, and Trendkill are all amazing.

If this was a "Dimebag vs. Kerry King" thread, I'd have voted for Dime for sure. Dimebag was one of the best guitar players in the history of music.
Since this thread is "Pantera vs. Slayer", I vote for Slayer. I have all albums from both bands, and I prefer Slayer overall.

they did talk about past in interviews and stuff,u would have to agree that cowboys was the record where it all came together,i would love vinnie to release all the old records properly, they really paid there dues and busted there balls to get to the top, what an achievment.

Yeah, the stuff before Cowboys ain´t much to talk about.

My real problem with Pantera is Phil. Good voice and sometimes funny but I hate stupid addicts who insists on doing shows drunk or stoned. Saw the video from the Ozzfest tour and the Phil the drunk sucked. Ranting, mumbling, posing but no singing (do I need to mention that the fucking hicks in the audience seemed to love it anyway? Maybe he reminded them of their dads?). I hope Pepper, Jim and co. can keep him clean on the Down-tour.

Slayer. Harder, faster, meaner. But as for live show? Pantera. I have seen Slayer once and Pantera twice. The ONLY reason I say Pantera on this was because of Dime and how he worked the crowd.

You're right, they play different styles [thrash/speed metal(Slayer) and neo-thrash "groove" metal(Pantera) to be technical :p ].However, if a comparison HAS to be made,IMO, from a guitar playing point of view (both lead and rhythm), Pantera had more creative riffs, more melodic solos, and a more "massive sound". Vinnie's drum playing is totally different from Lombardo's, so it's hard to make a comparison there. Vocalists can't be compared anyway because they're all supposed to be unique in their own way. Nonetheless..I say Pantera wins.
However, you have to keep in mind that without Slayer and the other thrash metal bands, Pantera would probably never have become what it did with "Cowboys from Hell". They would still, with 70 % probability, have stayed a hair/glam metal band.

R.I.P Dimebag

Slayer.

Pantera were a damn good band, but a stack of people on here will be nostalgia voting for them due to the 'Dimebag being Dead' factor winning by default.
Whatever about that. I've liked both bands for years and years so that's completely irrelevant. Pantera, just for 3 records. Cowboys, Vulgar, and Driven are the best and angriest heavy metal record ever made. All screaming heavy metal nowadays owe their existence to Pantera. And yes, I'm aware that Phil was into underground hardcore shit and took that bald angry dude image from there (Cro-Mags come to mind), but you tell me that late 90s and 00s metal like Slipknot, Killswitch, newer bands like Diecast, aren't huge Pantera fans.

I also like Slayer a helluva lot; I can listen to Seasons and South of Heaven til the cows come home. Reign is a thrash fuckin' classic, and it's grown on me over the years. Slayer's later records are a bit lackluster, especially God Hates Us All, but I like Diabolus and some tracks on Divine. But for me, and this is entirely subjective, of course, nothing could touch the anger, heaviness, groove, and fuckin' attack of Pantera. Vulgar contains some of my favorite vocals of ALL fuckin' time. And Cemetary Gates--a bonafide classic.

And I'll most likely see Slayer's summer tour, and PUT OUT YOUR NEW RECORD, FUCK!!

Love both bands, but I like Pantera more. Pantera's music was much more diversified than Slayer's. You play Pantera albums back-to-back-to-back and you hear the progression and the variety. Do the same with Slayer and it all starts to run together eventually.

I like Slayer a lot, but I agree. The Abbotts were and are such well-rounded musicians; I think it helped a lot that their father is a blues musician and they grew up in TX, exposing them to so much more than rock and metal. Then add Anselmo into the mix, with his background in Nawlins and you have a rather unique chemistry. Kerry King is really only into metal.

dimebag vinnie and rex were the best of the best..phil was just the icing on the cake...great band

slayer is great too but all that fast heavy screaming stuff just drives me insane and basicly puts me into a "i wanna kick the shit out of something" mood

I said "pantera" based on the musicianship in the band, not based on "nostalgia." If Dime were still alive and Pantera were still together, I would not have had a different answer. I really like Slayer, I think they are a great band to drive, screw, get drunk to, party to, rock out to, but what it came down to for me is that they are not as good at their jobs as Pantera. Rex blows tom away on bass - now maybe I am only saying that because I can usually hear Rex's bass as opposed to Tom's, but it is what I believe. I think Dave is an awesome drummer, but Vinnie is much more dynamic. It's not near blast beat speed all the time, he knows when to chill out, he knows when to shut up, and he knows when to let it all go nuts. I suppose the singers are equally matched - I always thought Tom would be a better singer then bass player. Like he would be more entertaining if he was not tied down to an instrument you usually can't here when they play anyway. And Phill is good too - I think he was insane on CFH but even now I still like his voice - I don't like his band and I don't like his attitude, but he is a good singer. As far as guitars go, I am sorry but the Slayer guys do not even touch Dime. Jeff and Kerry together still don't touch Dime. Dime was simply one of the best guitar players around. He was diverse, innonative, his tone was out of this world. No contest at all in my opinion.

Sums it up for me really.
