Not to be a dick, but isn't the musician's forum there so people can talk theory and shit like that? Personally, i am getting goddamned sick of these threads that are theory arguements in the main forum. Yeah, i am not big into the theory side of symphony x (vs. dream theater), so i don't care. If i am being a dick, then sorry, but that's what the musicians forum is for. Honestly, i don't care what mode romeo is playing in. it makes no difference. This is NOT a personal attack against any one forum member, but rather just a plea to use the forums as they are supposed to. If no one else agrees, then i'll take back my request, but i kinda doubt i am alone on this.

Um... as a person who IS interested in the theory side of Symphony X, what threads are you talking about? I'm guessing the MJR vs. JP thread?

And I'm guessing you might be talking about people who say MJR sticks to harmonic minor a lot. *shrug* All neoclassical guys get that from time to time.

i am talking about a lot of threads. MJR vs JP, the off topic thread, all that. It's not just theory talk i suppose, but just musician talk in general. Look at the last page of the off topic forum. I mean, it is somewhat relevant, but at the same time it belongs in the musician forum. Is it really too much to ask to click one extra click to get to that forum? People bitch that no one checks the musician's forum, but that's because all the shit that belongs there ends up in the regular forum.

Well, it sounds like you're talking about threads that start as one thing, but eventually turn into talk about theory. IMO, if the thread had started OUT with a topic of "Harmonic Minor vs. Aeolian", or something, then it would be worth complaining about.

as someone who enjoys music but doesn't know a whole lot about it, i feel what you are saying. when i see something on this forum that has to do with all the technical/theory stuff, i just skip over it. not that thats a big deal, but it would be nice if all that stuff was kept to the musicians forum, thats what its there for! but sometimes i guess you can't help it so whatever...

yeah. like i said, not trying to start any battles, and i kinda doubt it'll do any good, but i guess it's a pet peeve. I think Sevenstring has a good point though. To be fair, a lot of these don't start out as music theory driven, but at the same time what do you expect a thread about Romeo vs. *insert guitarist of your choice* to evolve into? Oh well, to hell with it. I suppose i should quit bitching. Sorry everyone

Well, I like the diminished modes Romeo plays in. It sounds so dark and imposing, when compared to most of Petrucci's stuff. He needs to get his head out of Phrygian's ass and stop lowering all of his 4ths and 6ths, like In The Name Of God (around the 7:36 mark, right after Myung plays that cool C#m Dorian bass groove).

:p

Nah, I'm just messing with ya. I agree - music theory threads should be kept to the Musicians forum. However, I don't think it's a HUGE deal...

You do realize the phrygian mode is characterized by a b2, b3, b6 and b7, and that 4th's can only be sharped and not flatted (a b4 is the same as a 3rd). *runs and hides from Zach* :D

Of course you can flat a fourth... it'd become diminished (opposite of augmented, when you sharp the fourth), since the fourth is a perfect interval.

I haven't noticed any of these "theory battle" threads. Hmm... Maybe it's just me? Though I do understand what you're saying. Maybe we should have a JP vs. MR forum...

Right, and you could also call a major third a quadruple augmented unison if you wanted to and play it in the key of B# minor, my point was that in practical useage you don't really see flat 4ths since its sonically the same as a major 3rd :p.

Well I know shit about music and all its technicalities myself, so like wicked, when I see a thread about something like that, or even a post on a seperate thread, i just yawn and keep going. It doesnt piss me off or anything, as much as the many perhaps pointless threads that keep getting made generally dont bother me either.

Well, at least SOME people are saying SOMETHING.

The Forum is running in low gear these days.
Ahh, but better in low gear with a low signal to noise ratio, than high gear with excessive crap that you have to wade through to find anything of substance.. ;)

There's a lot of stuff on here that bores the hell out of me, but I just don't read it. *shrug*

But I suppose since I do hit the musician forum for guitar geek talk and it's never there, I WOULD like the theory stuff to go there. Meh. Either way for me, just seems like that's the whole point of Musician's Corner.
